Conference on “Transmission, Distribution & Metering India (Enabling Smart Grid & Smart Metering)Session- 3Advance Metering Infrastructure, Smart Metering in Transmission & Distribution and Power Trading 10-11-November, 2010 Organised by Council of Power Utilities (CPU) & India Core Presentation from: P.J. PATEL, Chief Engineer, UGVCL, Gujarat
Main focus of conference • Transmission, Distribution & Metering • Technology upgradation • Renewable Energy Sources • Smart Metering • Advanced Metering Infrastructure • Dynamic Distribution Networks • Generation Portfolio • Demand Side Management • Energy Efficiency • Developments to improve Grid connectivity • Business Opportunities
Smart Grid & Smart Meters • Basic requirements • Grid management (SCADA) • Grid Energy Management (upto DT) • HT Technical loss evaluation • Management of distribution network • Automated metering infrastructure (AMI) • Consumer Energy management • Demand side management • Transformer load management • Consumer Services • Same system can be used for Water and Gas networks
Smart Grid • Traditional Power Grid need upgradetion to meet prompt consumer services, Increase of Power demand, Higher reliability and quality power • Smart Grid is a vision of a better electricity delivery inftrastructure. • Requirements: • Different sources of power generation connection to Grid • Centralised and Distributed generating stations connection to Grid • Integrated Grid network • To meet peak demand • Distributed Energy Resource (DER) integration with the Grid • It needs effective regulatory frameworks to deploy smart metering and smart grid programmes. • Smart metering, AMI, automated distribution, grid security, interoperability etc
Energy Meters • Different types of Energy meters available but not having common data communication media (i.e. common protocol) • Use of DLMS / COSEM meters - Three phase are the requirement in RAPDRP • DLMS: Device language message specification • Standard: IEC 62056 having Indian companion standard • New type of interface • OBIS identifiers
Energy Meters • AMR meters • Reduction of Expenses • Increase of Income • Improvement of Customer Services • AMI – Automatic Meter Infrastructure • Consumer meters, intermediate communication meters, data concentrator, GPRS, server and its software • Metering, Billing, remote meter connect/disconnect, Energy audit, report generation • Smart Meters • Two way communication facility and programmable
Meter Interoperability • MIOS – Meter inter-operability solution • IEEMA Meter Division has promoted this Forum called MIOS • Objective to provide possible way forward by the metering companies so that utilities can use common IT infrastructure to gather information from meters of all makes to ensure vendor independent integration of meter data for their business processes through interoperability. • API – Application Programme Interface • All meter manufacturers have to give API complying to specifications and they can continue their existing Protocols
Smart Grid • Smart grids presents • growth in economy • Reduction of Expenses • Reduction of Energy Losses • Better load management • Smart appliances • Controlling of supply • Remote monitoring of network • AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) have completed technical evaluation and assessment of communications standards for smart appliances • The Dutch association of energy network operators (Netbeheer Nederland) has released privacy and security requirements for the country’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI)
DLMS: Device language message specification • A Guideline paper issued by CPRI, Banglore for “Data Exchange for Electricity Meter Reading, Tariff and Load Control: A companion specification. • IDIS: Interoperable device interface specifications • DLC: Distribution Line Carrier communications protocol • has been implemented as part of smart metering and smart grid solutions at a number of utilities including Energie AG in Austria, Arbon Energie in Switzerland and EnBW Ostwürttemberg Donau Ries AG (EnBW ODR) in Germany
UGVCL experience • 100% AMR used in HT consumers and introducing upto 50KW load LT Industrial consumers. • Implemented e-Urja ERP solution upto sub-division level • IT implemented and capable to take benefit of Smart grid system • Undertaken one pilot project of AMI at our Kalol Division • Software and equipments were provided by SPML, Hydrabad • Consumer meter not removed. Its accuracy compared with series interface meter • LT side PLC communication used • HT side GPRS communication used • Data concentrator fixed on DT • Server at SPML centre being pilot project • From any offices you can see the online data and reports • It helps a lot to improve the system in short duration without trial.
