Purpose of NBDE Part 1 “The purpose of the Part I and Part II examinations is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dentists who seek licensure to practice dentistry.” --Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations
Limitations of NBDE Part 1 “…comparing scores across certain years is not appropriate because they have different meanings in terms of the knowledge and problem solving skills of candidates.” --Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations “The Joint Commission had concerns about the use of scores for a variety of purposes, for which there is little, if any, validity evidence, e.g., ranking dental schools, faculty evaluations, and uses as an admissions tool.” --Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations

Review So… • purpose is licensure based. • scores can’t be compared across years. • validity doesn’t justify scores used as admissions tool. • scores can’t differentiate knowledge difference across values.
What Does This Mean? According to this information, other than a pass or a fail, NBDE Part 1 scores appear to be without meaning.
Student Position • Move to Pass/Fail scoring for NBDE Part 1 is correct action. • We are not opposed to the use of a standardized test in advanced graduate admissions, but we believe the test should be validated for that purpose. • Given this information related to NBDE Part 1, the advanced graduate admissions process should be re-evaluated.
Possible Alternatives • Statistically Valid Advanced Graduate Exam • Portfolios • Emphasis on Externships • Enhancing Interviews • More thorough Evaluations by Faculty at Student’s Dental School
