  1.  Your task • Following the Reichstag Fire (Feb 1933) the Nazis used Article 48 to declare a state of emergency. During the March elections only the Nazis were allowed to campaign and the SA were used to enforce law and order on the streets and at the polling stations! Study the illustrations and work out the different ways the Nazis dealt with opposition.

  4.  Your task • Read p. 67 and list the tactics used by the Nazis to deal with opposition. Arrest of Communist leaders by SA troops in Prussia

  5.  Your task • Read p.68 including Source 3, and make notes on how the Nazis managed to pass the Enabling Act: • Key features of the Enabling Act • Ways in which it was passed

Key features • All power passed to Chancellor • Hitler could pass laws without consulting Reichstag or President • Reichstag voted itself out of existence (met only 12 times in 11 years, acting as a ‘rubber stamp’) • Could effectively establish a dictatorship • Triggered ‘Nazi revolution in government’

  7. Ways it was passed • Communists banned from Reichstag • Pressure put on other parties, e.g. Social Democrats to vote for Enabling Act • Hitler bullied other parties into supporting Enabling Act, e.g. protecting democracy, use of SA & Nazi supporters

  8.  Group task • Read Source 3 again. In your groups, imagine you are supporters of the Nazi party. Rewrite the source as closely as you can, but describe events from a Nazi viewpoint. Merits to the most complete and detailed account with strongest evidence of bias.

  9.  Plenary • Which opposition groups had Hitler dealt with by March 1933? Where else might Hitler face resistance to his plans? Who would be next on his hit list?

  10.  Homework • Produce a Nazi newspaper front page, describing the Reichstag fire. Your paper needs to include the following: • Description of the fire (p.63) • Suggestions at who was to blame (p.64-5) • Denials of Nazi involvement (as above) • Suggestions at what now needs to be done (p.68)
