  2. What? • Unalienable= Cannot take away • Usurpations= Wrongful or illegal encroachment- You have crossed the line • Transient= Last’s for a short time • Despotism= absolute power or control; tyranny • Evinces= To show clearly; prove

  3. What is your goal for today? • I want you to leave the room understanding how the early years of the revolution and it’s most important document helped define our basic government institutions.

  5. Why should we study the Declaration? • 1. It is one of our more cherished documents • 2. Laid down the founding principles of the new nation. • “I did not consider it any part of my charge to invent new ideas, but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject in terms so plain as to command their assent…It was intended to be an expression of the American mind.”

  6. First of its kind! • How does this relate to government? • Well, it was the FOUNDATION • No government at the time has been founded on the principles of human liberty and consent of the governed. • Many countries since have followed suit- such as France • Pg 45 in your text

Who proposed it? • It was proposed by a Virginia named Richard Henry Lee, he introduced the legislation before Congress. • It was proposed more than a year after the fighting has begun • The Congress named a committee to write the Declaration= John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman

  8. Is it the Original? • No= Jefferson wanted to denounce slavery within the Declaration- that did not go over well, and was taken out of the Declaration. • On July 4th, 1776 the final draft was approved

  9. How is it organized? • 3 parts • 1. Statement of purpose and basic human rights • 2. List of specific complaints • 3. Conclusion=states the determination to break with England

Led to the First State Constituions • The Declaration helped the separate Colonies transform from colonies to states who had the higher authority • Think of the definition of state from Unit • By the end of 1776, 10 states had adopted written constitutions-within a few years every state had a written constitution.

  11. It’s Legacy • Can be found within every state constitution and the United States Constitution. • What do you think it’s legacy is?
