Four steps to learning • MEMORISING • MINDPOWER • MANAGEMENT • MAKING SURE
The 3 pound Genius… The Primitive Brain Controls basic life functions – breathing, sleep, body clock etc The Middle Brain Controls emotions, moods, feelings and long term memory The Thinking Brain This is your intelligent brain – the grey matter, divided into two hemisphere
What are these two ‘sides’? The Left Half (Academic Brain) The Right Half (Creative Brain) Deals with: Order, Sequences, logic, numbers, words,Language. Likes a step by step approach. activated in normal lessons. Deals with: Colour, shape, 3D pattern, rhythm, meaning/experience awareness & prefers to look at the whole picture.
The effect on you….. • You will learn best through your preferred style. • It is important that you use your most successful tactics (see handout) • Equally important to mix them up – then you will learn best & link hemispheres.
How do we learn… • Information received by senses • Stops in SHORT TERM MEMORY • With repetition it starts to be burnt in • Hopefully information lodged in LONG TERM MEMORY.

WHY ARE WE HERE? Choose yourself an aspiration – what do you want. Write it down and stick on the wall where you work
How to be positive… • See a difficult task as a challenge not a threat • See opportunities not problems • Consider that all ideas and suggestions are possible • Avoid negative and damaging ‘moaners’ • See ‘failure’ as temporary • Speak & act positively & enthusiastically • Use positive gestures: smile often, cheerful tone of voice • Look forwards not back.
Don’t just take my word for it • George Bernard Shaw: • “You see things and say ‘why’. I dream of things that never were and say ‘Why Not’?” • Henry Ford: • “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re probably right.” • W.Somerset Maughan • “If you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.”

Planning your work session • Set yourself an objective • Estimate your limits – don’t do too much • 30-40 minutes are best • 5-10 minute breaks are all you need • Plan in a review period to check what you have done • 5-6 session per half day is best and REVIEW everything in the evening.

Making Sure • Being reflective • Review your own view of things to be aware of possibilities and opportunities • Do this before a problem forces you to • Make it a daily / weekly process • “If you continue to do what you have always done, then you’ll continue to get what you’ve always got!”
In conclusion.. • Mistakes are simply ‘what you will get right next time’ NOT failures • Concentrate on positives • You are unique and capable • Your brain has all the tools you need • Record ALL successes • And finally…..
