Cellular Respiration How we make ATP…
Respiration • Respiration- the process by which FOOD molecules are broken down to release “E” (ATP) • Happens in BOTH plants and animals!
Types of Organisms that Respire • Heterotroph (consumers)- Animal (humans) • Autotrophs (Producers)- Plants
Organisms Need • Organisms need 2 things • O2 - through breathing air in, then attaches to a red blood cell. • C6H12O6 - through eating food
Organisms Produce • Organism produce 3 things • CO2 – waste product (exhale) • H2O – used by body • ATP – ENERGY
Respiration Equation • Opposite of Photosynthesis!! • Law of Conservation of Matter: matter can neither be created or destroyed. • Count C, H, and O on both sides of the reaction. Reactants Products
Where Respiration takes place • Respiration takes place in Mitochondria. (in autotrophs and heterotrophs) (This is why the mitochondria is called the power house)
Types of Respiration • 1. Anaerobic Respiration (fermentation) • With OUT oxygen (O2) • Makes 2 ATP
1. Anaerobic = NO O2 • Step 1: Glycolysis = breaking down glucose to make 2 ATP. • Takes place in the cytoplasm.
1. Anaerobic= NO O2 • Step 2: • Lactic Acid Fermentation • Glucose is converted into lactic acid • Happens in muscles • NO OXYGEN • OR Step 2: • Alcoholic Fermentation • Glucose is converted into alcohol and CO2 • Happens in yeast • Yeast does this to make bread, and alcohol. • NO OXYGEN
Types of Respiration • 2. Aerobic Respiration • With oxygen (O2) • Makes 36-38 ATP
2. Aerobic = With O2 • Step 1: Glycolysis (in Cytoplasm) = 2 ATP • Step 2: Krebs Cycle (in Mitochondria) = 2 ATP • Step 3: ETC (in Mitochondria) = 32 ATP (O2 consumed and H2O is made) • TOTAL 36-38 ATP is made
Respiration Overview • Occurs in the Mitochondria • Happens ALL the time • Reactants - C6H12O6 + O2 • Products - CO2 + H2O + E • Anaerobic = No Oxygen • Aerobic = With Oxygen • Result of Glycolysis = 2 ATP • Result of Krebs Cycle = 2 ATP • Result of ETC = 32 ATP • E total = 36 ATP
