  1. Welfare Entitlements • RIES – sees those who get refugee status and HP.

  2. Integration Loans • To buy items that will help refugee integrate into UK e.g.: - • Housing deposit • work clothes and equipment • education and training NOT • luxury items • living expenses

  3. Integration Loans • 18 or over with • refugee status, or • humanitarian protection, or • leave as dependant of above..... granted after 11.06.07.

  4. Integration Loans • Partners can make joint application for 1 loan • £100-£1,000 • Returnable if not used for purpose given • Bank account or cheque if under £450 • Apply to BIA • Repaid to DWP • Try community care grant / social fund loan 1st

  5. Benefits and Immigration • Rules for obtaining visa • Condition of 'no recourse' • Rules for specific benefit entitlement

  14. Health charges for asylum seekers • Is patient an ‘overseas visitor? • Is treatment exempt from charge? • Is the overseas visitor exempt from charges – asylum seeker nor a.r.e? • If has to pay - has the course of treatment begun before became liable?

Treatment exempt from charge • Accident & Emergency / NHS walk-in • Non-hospital treatment e.g. GP’s treatment • Specified diseases (not including HIV) • Family planning • STD clinic treatment but not for HIV (with the exception of the test and counselling)‏ • Treatment after sectioned or on probation

  16. Exempt patients 1 • Lawful employees and self-employed • Voluntary health workers • Taking up settlement • 1 years lawful residence • students on a course of 6 months+ or more • Refugees and asylum applicants • Prisoners / detained • Reciprocal arrangements • EU exemptions

  17. Patient exemptions 2 – need arose during visit • EU/EEA nationals • Refugees recognised in EU and their family • 10-years lawful residence in UK at any time • Schedule 2 nationals • ECSMA nationals without the funds • Authorised family members of those being treated exceptionally
