LAMPS Avoiding the Icebergs 5th July 2013 Paul Hitchcock Director Allied Health Professions Federation
Difficult times…? • The financial challenge is with us for the foreseeable future • Population demographics are changing • Long term conditions alone consume 70% of the total health and social care spend in England • Currently using 72% of inpatient beds • Taking up 68% of out patient appointments • 55% of GP appointments • Public expectations are changing
A recognition the system is failing… • The Francis Report into Mid Staffs • Health inequalities • Social determinants of health (Marmot) • A workforce under stress (Boorman)
Oh and by the way… • Major structural reorganisation
To survive and thrive • Need for service redesign • Deliver at increased scale • With enhanced quality • Need for a paradigm shift • Wellness not illness • Patients take responsibility for their own health • Patients control the wellness process • Transformational change not simple transactional change
Transformational change • People drivers • How people work • Skill mix • Workforce considerations • Financial drivers • How outcomes are commissioned • Technology and process drivers
AHPs leading transformational change Engage with • Patients • Your commissioners • Your politicians Be professional And do it now…
