Lazarus, For The Glory of God PORTRAITS IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN Gospel Conversations John 11:1-57
The BIG DelayPrimary Point: Everything in our lives is for HIS GLORY: (vs.1-4) Romans 5:2 (ESV) 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV) 31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 4:6 (ESV) 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The BIG Delay I. Deliberate Delay: (vs.4-7) • Not for lack of love. • Not for fear of the Jews. • FOR A BETTER WAY. The Father’s plan to validate Jesus’ power over death. • FOR COMPLETION OF THE MISSION: “I am the Resurrection and the Life”
The BIG Delay II. Enhanced Expectations: (vs.9-15) • There is a limited amount of time to work, 12 hrs in a day. (vs.9-11) • Jesus has a deeper meaning to most of the work He performs. (vs.12-13) • Jesus’ intent is to build your belief: (vs.14,15) John 4:34; 9:4 and Eph 5:16.
The BIG Delay III. Main Message: (vs.16-25) • Lazarus’ death was definite, “he was dead 4 days.” (vs.17) Jesus would be dead as well. • Thomas was the anxious and loyal disciple here: (vs.16) Required in the disciples future • Martha was the outspoken one, “Lord, if you had been here he would not have died.” (vs.21) Speak up • Martha was theologically accurate but, not fully understanding that Jesus Himself was the embodiment of the Resurrection. We too shall rise
Your life…for the glory of God • Admit your selfishness in the way you believe God has responded to you? • Give God the opportunity to work in your life FOR THE GLORY OF GOD. • “Whether you eat or drink do all for the glory of God.” I Corinthians 10:31
