New Words Translation READING AND SPEAKING Reaching New Heights On March 28, 2011, a large crowd stood below Dubai’s 828-meter Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world to watch the “Amazing Spiderman” climb up the side. After six hours, 14 minutes and 55 seconds, he reached the top. Frenchman Alain Robert is an “urban free-climber”. He climbs the world’s tallest buildings with his bare hands and feet and doesn’t worry about falling. He has climbed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York, and more than 70 others.
Translation READING AND SPEAKING Robert started climbing when he was 12. One day, he forgot to take the key to his family’s eighth-floor apartment, so he climbed through a window. After that, he practiced climbing rocks and mountains, then buildings. “Taking risks is my way of life,” He says. “Modern people are only willing to believe in their computers, but I believe in myself.” He plans on climbing a building in South Korea next. Psychologists would classify Robert as a thrill-seeker: someone who looks forward to taking risks. Thrill-seekers may have a higher risk tolerance than most people. High in energy and confidence, they need excitement. Instead of avoiding their fears, they face them.
Translation READING AND SPEAKING Many risk-takers do extreme sports like bungee jumping or skydiving. Going to an amusement park and riding a roller coaster are less dangerous leisure-time activities that also provide sense of freedom. So are adventure tours, whitewater rafting, or mountain climbing when experienced guides and safety equipment make the experience less risky. In addition, thrill-seekers don’t have to be athletes. Businesspeople, artists, and scientists often take risks, finding excitement in ideas.

Bungee Jumping Bungee jumping (also spelled bungy jumping) is the sport of leaping from a tall structure while connected to a large rubber band. The tall structure is usually a bridge, crane, hot-air-balloon or a helicopter. The intense thrill comes as much from the free-falls as from the rebounds. When the person jumps, the cord stretches to absorb the energy of the fall, then the jumper flies upwards again as the cord snaps back. The jumper oscillates up and down until all the energy is dissipated. The word bungee, first appeared around 1930 and was the name for rubber eraser. As with any sport, injuries can still occur, but there have been few fatalities. A relatively common mistake in fatality cases is to use too long a cord. The cord should be substantially shorter than the height of the jumping platform to allow it room to stretch.
