AROMAT-1: Airborne Romanian Measurements of Aerosols and Trace gases • ESA campaign coordinated by BIRA (Belgium), including 7 other research institutions Uni. Galati, INOE, INCAS, (Romania), IUP-Bremen, Uni. Berlin, MPIC (Germany), KNMI (The Netherlands) • Aim: test newly developed airborne instruments for air quality research and prepare forthcoming intercomparison/S5P validation campaign in Romania Constantin et al., TSWJ, 2013 • First week in Bucharest • (largest city in Romania, with 2.2 million pop., heavy • traffic ) • Second week in Turceni: small village in the • countryside but with a very large power plant know • to be a major source of NOx,SO2 and aerosols • -> Both spots visible on OMI data Turceni

New Experiments in Bucharest - Mapping NO2 with Cessna and AirMap together (intercomparison) - Mobile DOAS intercomparison (H2CO) • Sounding bn-2 for aerosol and NO2 profiles • Pandora at INOE (but no more UAV in Bucharest) New Experiments in Turceni • NO2Profiles with the glider • Intercomparison and tomography with SO2 camera • Mobile DOAS intercomparison (SO2) • Aerosol profile with ESA lidar (but no more balloon in Turceni)
AROMAT-3? S5P cal/val campaign (late summer 2017) Objective: evaluate the ability of TROPOMI to resolve NO2 distributions at inner-city scale, and at even smaller scale (emission plumes from powerplants). ->two targets: Bucharest and Turceni(?) ->longer term operation of ground-based systems to collect more validation data.In Bucharest (core period of the campaign): static and mobile ground-based systems, together with aircraft instruments to map the horizontal distribution of NO2 (AirMap and APEX). MAXDOAS, Lidar, NO2 in situ sondes for vertical distributions of NO2 and aerosols Ground-based systems at several places inside and around Bucharest for reference points in the map. For Turceni: ? (is it a good place for satellite validation?)
