  5. How does the cartoonist portray the relationship between King Louis, the 1st and 2ndEstates, and the 3rdEstate?

  6. Speech to the National Convention – Feb 5th, 1794The Terror JustifiedMaximillian Robespierre It is time to mark clearly the aim of the Revolution and the end toward which we wish to move; it is time to take stock of ourselves, of the obstacles which we still face, and of the means which we ought to adopt to attain our objectives.... What is the goal for which we strive? A peaceful enjoyment of liberty and equality, the rule of that eternal justice whose laws are engraved, not upon marble or stone, but in the hearts of all men. We wish an order of things where all 1ow and cruel passions are enchained by the laws, all beneficent and generous feelings aroused; where ambition is the desire to merit glory and to serve one's fatherland; where distinctions are born only of equality itself; where the citizen is subject to the magistrate, the magistrate to the people, the people to justice; where the nation safeguards the welfare of each individual, and each individual proudly enjoys the prosperity and glory of his fatherland; where all spirits are enlarged by the constant exchange of republican sentiments and by the need of earning the respect of a great people; where the arts are the adornment of liberty, which ennobles them; and where commerce is the source of public wealth, not simply of monstrous opulence for a few families. LET’S SOURCE THIS DOC… See any bias? What side of the argument would this help?

  7. 3rd: Write your Response Should be a 5 paragraph essay when finished with a TEA format. DBQs are nice because there is a clear format that makes writing easier than English essays.

  8. INTRO PARAGRAPHThink of a Funnel! Sentence 1: Grand Statement about the topic/time period. • This will “open up” and set the scene for your reader. Sentence 2: Narrow the topic a bit. • Include a statement that gets readers closer to the topic of your DBQ. Sentence 3: Thesis statement. • This should clearly state your opinion/ arguementon the prompt. • You want to come across as being sophisticated • IF YOU WANT TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF: • Try to include the word ‘although’ or ‘however’ • In doing that, you have to recognize the antithesis and then demonstrate it is not correct Sentence 4: Plan of Attack • List the 3 main areas you will use as the “evidence” in your body paragraphs.

  9. BODY PARAGRAPHS – T.E.A. First sentence: should be a connection to the thesis. • That is, it connects to your overall argument EVIDENCE/EXAMPLES to justify your argument. • Need to include outside data here • If a DBQ, this is where you have doc references • Internal citations too! • Include ANALYSIS/LINK to thesis after EACH example! Last Sentence: Conclude paragraph by summarizing your argument and connecting back to your thesis

  10. CONCLUSION • Return to the theme in the introduction • Synthesize, don't summarize • Include a provocative insight or quotation from the research or reading you did for your paper • Point to broader implications NO… • No “In Conclusion” or “In summary” or “in closing” • No new arguments • No new evidence (stats, etc – that should be in your body paragraphs) • No references to “today's world” • No thesis for the first time • No emotional appeals
