Emancipation Proclamation • Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It declared that all slaves in states “still in rebellion” would be free as of January 1, 1863.
The Proclamation gave the Union a new cause to fight for – to free the slaves. It also convinced Britain to stay out of the war.
