The First Indo-China War • France was occupied by Nazi Germany, lost its foothold in Vietnam and Japan took over. • The Viet Minh fought against Japanese, which surrendered at end of WW2, in 1945. • Ho Chi Minh took the capital of Hanoi and declared Vietnam an independent country, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. • France came back, in 1950 with American aid, and drove Ho’s forces into northern Vietnam • France lost at Dien Bien Phu and seeked a peace settlement.
General Democratic Elections (1956) • General Democratic elections were arriving • U.S. thought that the one government would win and reunite the country • U.S. helped South Vietnam hold elections in South Vietnam • Ngo Dinh Diem was elected
Diem in Control • He removed people from their homes and relocated them to areas under government & army surveillance • Catholic biased and family based • Tried to get rid of Communism, but his actions increased the amount of Communist supporters • In May 1959, Diem passed Law 10/59 which sought out Communists in South Vietnam • 1960, Caravelle Manifesto was issued and Southern Communists formed the National Liberation Front (NLF) which was supported by North Vietnam
Kennedy Administration • 35th President of U.S. • 1962, U.S. established the Military Assistance Command of Vietnam (MACV) • U.S. sent “military advisors” into South Vietnam • Many weapons that the MACV gave to the ARVN ended up in the hands of the Viet Cong • The ARVN soldiers that were drafted, were secretly apart of the National Liberation Front • U.S. spent time and money on training the enemy John F. End of Diem & Kennedy Ngo Dinh Diem John F. Kennedy 3 weeks later, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas VP Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn into office Kept Kennedy’s plans and advisors • August 1963, ARVN generals plotted to overthrow Diem • Supported by CIA operatives and U.S. ambassador in Saigon • November 1, coup was carried out • Duong Van Minh took power
