  2. Four Steps in Buying a Computer • What is the computer needed for? • How much money can I spend? • Which software serves my needs? • What kind of software best serves my needs?

  3. What is the computer needed for? • If the computer school related: • Favor the type most available on campus. • Check if one is needed for your major. (I.e. journalism major may want an IBM or IBM-compatible)

  4. CONTINUED… • If the computer is needed for work: • Favor the type needed for your job. • If needed for just necessity: • Look for the one you like the most.

  5. How much money can I spend? • Plan your buying for the future: • This buy won’t probably be you last. • Questions to ask yourself… • How much would I be willing to spend today? • How much am I prepared to spend in another year or two?

  6. What kind of software will best serve my needs? • According to computer experts: determine what software you need before you buy the hardware. • Reason: not all software runs in the hardware you need. • Make sure the software will get sufficient use two years down the road.

  7. What kind of hardware will best serve my needs? • The choice of software should be your guide for buying hardware. • If you are looking for the basic Word, Word Perfect, or Word Pro, these could be found in any basic microcomputer.

  8. New or Used? • Not everyone has the money for a new computer, so there is nothing wrong with buying a used one. • Price differences: • Used- About $300 for a used computer and $50 for a printer. • New- About $1000-$2500 for a new computer and about $150-300 for a printer
