What kind of use of the network? Some ideas from the answers to the SERENATE USER questionnaire: • Access to large database • Majority of YES • There is a difference between consultation and down-loading the file • Users are aware of the size of the files • Fields : Bibliography, social research, computer science, bio-informatics, e-journals, education, medical, litterature, multimedia, library catalogues • What about the audience?
What kind of use of the network? • Use of the National Research Network • Majority of YES but reading the answers may be confusion between the network as an infrastructure and as content (servers) • Is networking important for your work (other then e-mail or www) • Majority of YES • Services : distance collaboration, access to data bases and forum, file download,distributed computing, virtual communities, client-server services, distance learning. • What about the audience?

What kind of use of the network? • More use of multimedia over the network and what for? • Majority would like to • For : videoconferencing, access / download films or videos (education materials for ex.) or public service information or medical information or geographical information or e-journals, on line or archived conferences or lectures, collaboration, teaching • Geographical reach • Main users are involved in collaborative projects : both within Europe and outside Europe. • What about the audience?
What kind of use of the network? • Limitation due to network facilities • Slow network hardware, low bandwidth, unstability of the network, bandwidth costs, « human resistance » , limitations in regulation, software incompatibilities, intellectual property, campus network • Networks to improve in terms of : • speed, bandwidth, hardware, internet portals, database, videoconferencing, applications, storage, security • What about the audience?
What kind of use of the network? • Concerning Privacy, confidentiality, Authentification,security : • Opinions differ but in general : they are important topics. • Especially : data protection/access control, electronic signature,privacy, integrity/alteration of data, spam, … • Use limited by what type of connections? • Around 45% users do not see any limitation, • For the others : 50% by local networks, 24% by international, 13% by National, 13% by Regional • What about the audience?
What are the needs? • The current needs + the future trends are necessary to understand in order to serve at best the user. • Indeed they have consequences in terms of : • Service provided by NRENs : a network +value added services (security, data storage, help desk …) • Infrastructure of the network (who do we reach?) and levels of quality of service • and of course : funding
