  1. Chemistry!! March 13, 2013 Ms. Boon

  2. Objective: I can investigate practical uses of radioactive isotopes. • Agenda: • Catalyst • Homework Review • Radiocarbon dating Catalyst • Use your study guide to answer: • What is the difference between temperature and heat? • What is an acid and what is a base? • Take out your HW!

  3. Homework Review p. 657 #1,2,5,6 • The high energy electron that is emitted from from an unstable nucleus is called a beta particle. (p. 649)

  4. Homework Review p. 657 #1,2,5,6 2. Both fission and fusion involve the changing of a nucleus. Fission involves splitting the nucleus and fusion involves combining two small nuclei to form a larger nucleus. Both processes release energy. Fusion produces more energy per gram of starting material than fission. (p. 654-656)

  5. Homework Review p. 657 #5 a & b 233 4 229 U He Th 92 2 90 66 066 Cu eZn 29-130

  8. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErgdpG_N9vQ Radiocarbon dating Video Focus Questions: • What are the three natural carbon isotopes and which is radioactive? • What material did the scientists start with? • What material was sent to the accelerator for dating? • How does the accelerator separate the different carbon isotopes?

  9. Practice • Element symbol and radioactive decay worksheet. • For help on the radioactive decay worksheet: • Read page 658-662 Focus on sample problems B & C • Homework: • Read p. 658-666 Do problems: p. 666 #4, 9, 10, p. 669 #25, 26, 27 • Finish Radioactive Decay worksheet. • Study for benchmark exam
