Developing Reading Skills Develop children’s ability to become thinking readers using: • A metacognitive approach – the thinking process • Listen to that voice in your head! • Teacher models reading skill during a class lesson. • Follow up differentiated activities.

Developing Thinking Readers • Levels of comprehension • Right there! • Think and search! • On your own! • Be a reading detective! • Recognise the different types of questions. • Know and use different strategies to answer the questions.
Developing Thinking Readers • A whole class lesson is used to introduce the reading skill. • Children working in mixed ability pairs, ability group or individually. • Teacher refers to the ‘thinking reader’ wall display to encourage before reading, during reading and after reading strategies. • Children use a variety of fiction and non fiction, seen and unseen texts.
