  3. Germany’s Economic Collapse The Germany economy collapsed during the 1920s and 1930s.Many blamed the Treaty of Versailles.Germans wanted a leader who could restore Germany to its former glory. Worthless money used as wallpaper

  4. Annexation of Austria 1933: Hitler became chancellor and began to challenge the Treaty of Versailles.March 1938: German troops moved into Austria in order to bring it under Nazi rule.

  5. Public Vote In April of 1938, Germans and Austrians were given the opportunity to ratify the annexation in a public vote.

  6. Vote Results • 98.9% of Germans and 99.71% of Austrians voted to annex Austria. • Even given the unpopularity of the Treaty of Versailles, the margin of victorywas incredible. • Consequently, historians have examined the tactics that Nazi leaders used to ensure the vote passed.
