  1. Three Minute Thesis 3MT™ Introduction Professor Annette Street April 2013

  2. What is the Trans-Tasman(3MT™)? • A skills development activity which challenges Research Higher Degree students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.

  3. Why do it? • Great skill to have • Develop confidence and competence • A winner for your CV • Fun to prepare with colleagues • You can win travel grants • La Trobe winner gets trip The University of Western Sydney for the final in October.

  4. Who can take part? • Any one who is active in a Doctoral program with at least 66% research • Anyone with a thesis under submission on the date of their first presentation in their local competition • Graduates are not eligible.

  5. Rules • Single static PowerPoint slide is permitted • No additional props • 3 minutes maximum • Competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified • Decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

  6. Judging Criteria • Communication Style – was thesis topic and its significance communicated in language appropriate to an intelligent but non-specialist audience? • Comprehension – did the presentation help you understand the research? • Engagement – did the oration make you want to know more?
