  2. Key Question You have a chain of standard paper clips and your friend has a chain of jumbo paper clips. If your friend told you the length of objects in jumbo clips, how could you change that number into standard clip lengths?

  3. Materials • Jumbo paper clips, 12 per group • Standard paper clips, 19 per group

  4. Clipping Along • Make a chain for each size of paper clip using all of the clips given • Lay the chains side by side with one end of the chain matching the other chain

  5. Observe and Record How long in standard paper clips is a chain of 2 jumbo paper clips? a chain of 4 jumbo clips? a chain of 6 jumbo clips? a chain of 8 jumbo clips? a chain of 10 jumbo clips? a chain of 12 jumbo clips?

Clipping Along • Make a coordinate graph of the data • What patterns do you see? • What are some of the ratios of standard clips to jumbo clips? 9 standard clips to 6 jumbo clips (9/6) 6 standard clips to 4 jumbo clips (6/4) 3 standard clips to 2 jumbo clips (3/2) • How many standard clips is one jumbo clip? 1 ½ standard clips to 1 jumbo clip (1.5/1)

  7. Clipping Along • How can you use the patterns to convert lengths in jumbo paper clip units to standard paper clip units? For every jumbo clip you have 1.5 standard clips • Record your conversion method as an equation

  8. Clipping Along • Measure items around your desk in jumbo paper clip units. • Predict the measure of the same items in standard paper clip units using the graph and the equation. • Check your prediction with a standard paper clip chain.
