  4. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? • Also known as....why people move to new places! • Why we are here! • Let's brainstorm for a moment and come up with some reasons why we think people would move! Human Migration

  5. It is over 70,000 years ago: Imagine that you are a crafts person who has recently found a piece of red chalk. You are sitting in a cave in a cliff overlooking a lovely body of water that will later be called the Indian Ocean. It is a beautiful place to live. You have a cool breeze from the sea in summer and you build a small fire for warmth in the winter. A flowering shrub grows above your cave. Later, this place will be known as Blombos Cave in South Africa because of the name of the shrub. The carving that you made on the stone will later be known as the oldest example of a complex carving made by a human.

  6. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? • Scientists have come to believe that modern humans originated in Africa around 200,000 years ago. • Humans remained in Africa (and only in Africa) for thousands of years. Where we are from!

  7. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? The Evidence! Inference!

  8. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Sometime between 80,000 and 60,000 years ago, humans began to migrate out of Africa, first to Asia and later to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. The Great Human Migration had begun. Our First Big Move

  9. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? By 40,000 years ago, humans migrated to Europe, probably by two different routes. The Second Migration

  10. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Around 15,000 years ago, humans migrated to North America from Asia, and finally to South America. The Third Migration

  11. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Because this happened so long ago and there are no written records, we do not know exactly why humans migrated out of Africa or why they kept migrating until they had settled throughout the world. But why move?

  12. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? However, we do have evidence that gives us some clues about these prehistoric times: • We know that early human migrants were hunter-gatherers. • We also know that climatic changes occurred. • We know that human language and communication developed, as did technology, enabling the production of better tools. • Many other reasons may also have led to early migrations. Ideas

  13. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Migration:The act of moving from one place to another with the intent to live in another place permanently or for a longer period of time. Migration

  14. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Forced Vs. Voluntary Migration Forced migration: When people have no choice and are forced to move. Forced migration is also called “involuntary migration.” Voluntary migration: When people choose to move. People choose to migrate if they think the benefits (advantages) of moving will be greater than the costs (disadvantages).

  15. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Push factors: Negative reasons for wanting to leave a place (emigrate). • a lack of food or water • natural disasters • a lack of jobs and war Pull factors: Positive reasons for wanting to move to a place (immigrate). • more food and water • a better climate • higher wages and freedom Push & Pull Factors

  16. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Environmental Examples: Floods, water supply, climate, food supply for animals Political Examples: Political freedom, laws, wars Reasons for Migration

Cultural Examples: Desire for religious freedom or chance for a better education Economic Examples: To overcome shortages of food, housing, or space; to find better employment or higher wages Reasons for Migration

  18. Essential Question- What is the Land Bridge Theory and why do people migrate to new places? Your group will be presented with a situation... For each situation, please do the following: • Read the situation • Write the reason for migration • Identify if the reason is a push factor or a pull factor • I will collect the assignment at the close of the class period. Group Activity
