3. Purpose of State of the Schools The purpose of the State of the School and Title I Annual meeting is to: • Provide information about the current state of the school • Provide an update on the School Improvement Plan • Share priorities, goals and strategies for improvement • Provide ways in which families can be engaged throughout the year. • Clarify the purpose of Title I • Describe the communication parents/guardians can expect to receive regarding their child’s progress.

4. Agenda WHO WE ARE: SCHOOL’S CURRENT REALITY • Strengths: We had a 10% gain in the number of students meeting or exceeding on the Reading MCA. We have Native American culture and language infused throughout the day. • Challenges: We did not make gains in students meeting or exceeding on the Math MCA. We only have 49% of our students who attend school at least 95% of the time. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN • Using Math and Literacy small guided groups to support students from where they are at in math and literacy. • We use our Title I funds to hire AEs, Literacy Coach and materials to support guided group FAMILY ENGAGEMENT • Ms. CeCe is our Family Liaison and she regularly makes robo calls and sends home a monthly newsletter to communicate with families. She also helps to update our school website. • We have monthly Family Nights with an academic and cultural focus. We also have monthly Site Council meetings with our Parent Liaison and Principal.

5. Anishinabe AcademyWho We Are • Anishinabe Academy has existed since 2004 to serve urban Native American students in the city of Minneapolis. Anishinabe Academy offers a high quality by providing rigorous academics while weaving Native American culture and language into the educational experience. • At Anishinabe Academy we believe that revitalizing Native American culture and language that we can bring our students and families back to our roots and provide a place for Native students to flourish in their education. • Description Demographics: 89% Native American Community description: We serve all of Minneapolis Public Schools with a large portion of students coming from the Little Earth Community. Unique programing: We emphasize Native American culture and language. Community partners: Wakemup Productions, Reading Partners, Indian Health Board.

6. Current Reality Strengths: • We have many community partners that reach out to support our efforts in providing culture specific support. • We have many families who choose to be a part of Anishinabe Academy from High 5 through grade 5. • We are supported directly by Indian Education in provide ongoing professional development for our staff. Challenges • We currently have 16% of our students meeting or exceeding grade level expectations on the MCA III in reading. • We currently have 8% of our students meeting or exceeding MCA III in math.

7. Discipline Data To provide transparency for parents and community sharing of current discipline data is essential. • Current referral number: We have had a drastic decrease in the number of referrals from 921 in 2016-2017 to 269 in 2017-2018. • Current suspension number: We also had a significant decrease in the number of suspensions from 93 in 2016-2017 down to 43 in 2017-2018. • Area of growth and strength: this year we are using Responsive Classroom and ENVoY in each room PreK-5. We have one common School wide engagement plan and a PSWE team. We also have a Mediator and Peace Circle Keeper on staff to support struggling students with Culture Relevant social skills support.

8. School Designation • Current School Designation: ESSA Comprehension • The Minnesota Department of Education identifies a school designation at Title I schools every three years based on the following categories from the MCA results: • Proficiency • Growth (MCA to MCA) • Achievement Gap Reduction • Graduation Rate (HS only)

9. School Improvement Plan Our School Improvement Plan is designed to address the concerns revealed in the data and is focused on three core areas. • Student achievement • School climate and • Family engagement

Student Achievement(1-2 slides) Goal Areas: • The percentage of grade 3, 4, 5, students who meet or exceed on Reading MCA III will increase from 16% in 2017-2018 to 16% in 2018-2019. • The percentage of grade 3,4,5 students who meet or exceed on the Math MCA III will increase from 8% in 2017-2018 to 18% in 2018-2019. Strategies: 1) Focused Instruction to align what we teach with how we teach and what we assess. 2) Professional Learning Communities for teachers to come together and plan lessons to meet student needs. 3) Math and literacy interventions provided daily in K-5.

School Climate(1-2 slides) Goal Areas: • Student attendance will increase by 10% for students attending 90% over the school year, while the number of student suspensions will decrease by 10%, through implementation of clear behavior expectations using EnVoy strategies and social emotional learning curriculum to support student needs in social skills and mental health. Strategies: 1) Attendance plan created by the Attendance team. Goal is to reward good attendance and further support those struggling with attendance. 2) Responsive Classroom – All classroom teachers will use Responsive Classroom in their class, creating a positive and safe learning environment. 3)Positive Behavior Plan – PBIS team will meet every other week to review behavior data and support our school in implementing a School Wide Engagement plan.

12. Family Engagement Goal Areas: 1) Communication (2-way) – Regular Family Council Luncheons, Creation of a Facebook page, and an open line of communication with administration and Family Liaison. 2) Decision-making – Meeting with Family Council and online/paper surveys regarding priorities for budget. Strategies: 1) Parent-teacher-student conferences on reading goals and on reading progress 2) Family Council provides input on school goals and requirements for student attendance 3)Monthly newsletter with “tidbits” for supporting math and literacy, Math, Science and Literacy Nights, highlighting activities that families can do at home to support academic growth.

Title I and School Improvement Plan Title I is a federal program that provides money to schools and districts to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education to achieve proficiency on our state’s academic standards and assessments. Title I supports our School Improvement Plan and the funding we receive helps us to reach our goals.

15. Title I Do all schools receive Title I funds? • No. Title I programs are available to schools with the greatest concentration of low-income families. Budget • This year, % 6 of our school budget comes from this source. • The total Title I amount is $200,255 We are a school wide Title I program, which means all students are able to benefit from Title I services.

16. Use of Title I Funds at Our School Staffing that is funded through Title I Priority and Focus schools identify how you will use 20% of your Title I budget to provide interventions for struggling students. • Instructional Specialist/Literacy Coach to support the individual growth of teachers. • Two Associate Educators to support students with Social Emotional Skills and supporting Math and Literacy Interventions.

17. Use of Title I Funds at Our School • 19% is being used for professional development for our teachers • To provide substitutes to cover teachers for professional development. • Half time Teacher on Special Assignment to coach individual teachers. • 2% is being used for family involvement • Supporting Family Curriculum Nights and Family Council Luncheons. • 79% is being used for other purposes • Providing AE’s to support classroom interventions. • Classroom teachers and specialists. • Instructional Coach to support teachers’ professional growth.

18. Student Progress To monitor student learning, we use state assessments and other ways to gather information to plan programs and supports for our students. These are the ways we share this information with you about your student throughout the year. 1.Parent teacher goal setting conferences. 2. Midterm and quarterly progress reports.

19. As a parent, you have the right… • to know the qualifications of your child’s teacher • to know when your child has a substitute teacher for more than four weeks and the qualifications of the substitute teacher • to know how your child’s school is rated on its state test scores • to expect regular communication with your school in a language that you can understand • to work with other parents and staff to develop a school-level parent compact between the school and its families • to help plan how money for family involvement should be spent • to work with teachers, parents and the school principal to develop a family involvement plan • to ask for a meeting with your school principal or your child’s teacher at any time

20. Opportunities for Family Involvement • Provide input in the development of the School Improvement Plan, Family Involvement Plan, and the School Compact • Participate in Family Council luncheon meetingsand Family Night activities. • Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in Title I meetings and learning opportunities • Attend school events • Visit your child’s classroom or volunteer at your child’s school • Talk to your child’s teacher about events and issues that may affect your child’s work or behavior
