Summary The popularity of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is continually growing as the utilization of MIS has resulted in reduced patient stays and costs, which have been accompanied by improvements in operating room efficiency. To view the operating field during an MIS procedure, a surgeon uses a surgical camera in combination with an endoscope, which is inserted into the patient. Still images and videos from these endoscopic cameras and from overhead cameras are then captured by an image capture and recording device. This allows images and videos from an operation to be reviewed at a later date. As a result, most image capture devices are bought as a platform coupled with a surgical camera and a surgical light source. Very basic systems are much lower in cost and have the ability to record images in HD; however, they cannot record video in HD and have no integration ability. Mid-level devices are able to record all input in HD and can be connected to patient information systems, which can tie in the new images with hospital records. These systems are usually customizable, so usually the need of the hospital will determine the price range as a result of the number of features associated with the device.
