Over the past few months we have all seen images and heard news of the destruction caused in Japan by the earthquake and tsunami that struck off the North East coast of Japan in march. Our group decided that we would hold an open house fundraiser to benefit reconstruction efforts in Japan. The Need
Invited our friend to Tutta Bella to enjoy some pizza, beer, and Japanese television • Asked for a small donation from each of our friends • Secured matching donations from Tutta Bella • Gave presentations to help our friends understand what had happened in Japan • Raised over $500! What we did
Our gratitude goes out to: • All our friends for supporting us and supporting Japan • Tutta Bella for donating pizza and matching our donations • Mercy Corps for the good work they are doing in Japan • Our communications class for learning with us A big thank you!
The tsunami went over the sea wall at Fukushima and flooded the nuclear reactor • There was a partial melt down • A 12 mile radius was evacuated • Farm land is ruined in a 30 mile radius • There will be lasting cumulative health impact • The incident is contained and not getting worse. Sue's Talking Points: • Mercy Corps has been in Japan as soon as 3 days after struck, building and stocking shelters for evacuees. • They also constructed a bathing facility and are currently moving people in to temporary housing. • To help Japan rebuild economically, MC is working on a program to present cash or vouchers for people to buy necessities, as well as purchasing vans for vendors to provide these necessities on site. • Mercy Corps has implemented Comfort for Kids program, which employs Japanese to reach children who need post-trauma assistance. • Our event raised over $500 for Mercy Corps! • For more information visit: www.mercycorps.org/japanearthquake
