  2. Keep careful notes (writers often forget where the information comes from) Plan your research in advance to lessen the pressure citeall the information you've taken from sources, whether quoted verbatim or summarized; electronic or in print keep stylebooks /guides close by (Stamford Reference LB2369 .G53 2003) Refworks.uconn.edu(bibliographic citation manager)

  3. Types of plagiarism • 1. Full Plagiarism: Content that has been presented, without any changes made to the language, thoughts, flow, and even punctuation is known as full plagiarism. Many academicians believe that is generally the work of people who are incompetent in the particular subject, or are just plain lazy to make an effort. • 2. Partial Plagiarism: When the presented content is a combination of two to three different sources, where the use of rephrasing and synonyms is rampant, then it is known as partial plagiarism. Here, the author uses some originality, but inadequacy of knowledge on the particular subject is a common reason for the occurrences of partial plagiarism. • 3. Minimalistic Plagiarism: Here, the plagiarist authors someone else concept, ideas, thought, or opinions in their own words and in a different flow. Although many do not regard this as plagiarism (probably the one’s who do it!), it is considered as stealing someone’s study or thoughts. Minimalistic plagiarism involves a lot of paraphrasing.

  4. Plagiarism without citing • The Ghost Writer: Taking others’ work and using it as our own. • The Photocopy: Copying others’ work straight from the text without making it our own. • The Potluck Paper: Trying to disguise plagiarism by copying from many sources and making them fit together. • The Poor Disguise: Altering the paper’s disguise by changing words and phrases. • The Labor of Laziness: Taking the time to paraphrase the sources and making it fit together • The Self Stealer: Borrowing information generously from his or her previous work

  5. Plagiarism with citing • The Forgotten Footnote: Mentioning an author’s name for a source, but neglects to include specific information • 8.   The Misinformer: Providing inaccurate information regarding the sources, making it impossible to find them.

  6. Types of plagiarism • Partial/ Potluck plagiarism: Trying to hide plagiarism by copying from many sources and making them fit together. • Self-plagiarism: Using one’s work and re-writing it • The Ghost writer/Journal plagiarism: Taking other’s’ work and making it our own • Copy/Paste plagiarism: Copying part of one’s work • The Misinformer: Citing the source with innacurate information • Lazy plagiarism: Doing everything perfectly but didn’t type in any of our ideas. • Word switch/improper paraphrasing: Changing the words but still looks like the original work • The Forgotten footnote: Neglecting to include specific information when citing a source • The Perfect crime: Quoting and citing the work, but goes on to paraphrase other information from the source without citing • Style/organization: Copying one’s style of writing • Idea plagiarism: Copying one’s idea of their writing and submitting it as our own.

  7. Plagiarism, Spam, and Essay Writing Services • My post yesterday, What punishment for plagiarism?, has already attracted its first spam comment from the so-called "UK Essay Writing Services".  • Graphic from Practicalseo.Since I started to use the anti-spam measures (such as Moderation) that Blogger provides for comments, the number of comments on my blog has been greatly reduced, but occasionally spam such as the latest comment gets through. I will not publish this comment, though if you Google "UK Essay Writing Service" you will see for yourself what is available. • For £119.50 you can get a ten page "top-class essay exactly based on your specifications and requirements" which is "100% customised and non-plagiarised". The service assures you that this essay will attract a "Guaranteed 2:1 Standard". For £30 extra they will even guarantee you a First! Easy? Of course there are many other "services" available on-line that write essays for students, and some students think that we Lecturers don't know about them.  • My message? If you are thinking of using one of these "services" - don't do it!First, you have to provide some detail to the "service" about what you essay needs to be about - why not put this effort into your own work. If a service offers (as my spammer does) "high quality writing and meticulous referencing (both in-text referencing and bibliography)" - beware. This may be of a much higher standard that any other essay that you have submitted and that will arouse suspicion. Will you be able to get your hands on all the bibliography cited in "your essay"? Will you read any of the papers and work of others? Will you be able to answer any questions from your Lecturer about your essay? We do have the right to ask you to attend a viva where you might be asked to discuss the topic and defend your citations. Can you be sure that "your essay" will really beat anti-plagiarism software like Turnitin? • All a service like this proves is that you've got money and can afford to cheat better than someone else who goes to Wikipedia for their "essay". You might think you are clever, but this is not something that you can put on your CV, and you can't cheat your way through the rest of your life. In the future, would you hire someone  who cheated on their essay in College?

  8. Plagiarism Checker • Plagiarism software is a really simple tool that uses the content you search for, simultaneously scans all the websites on Google, and if it matches with each other completely then it will show you the amount of percentage that involves plagiarism along with the links of the websites present on Google, or any other source where it has been taken from on the internet. • The tool also indicates the originality of the content, which is extremely user friendly and will save you from the hassle of checking each link manually.
