  10. Silence for reflection

  11. When I survey the wondrous cross • on which the Prince of glory died, • my richest gain I count but loss, • and pour contempt on all my pride.

  12. Forbid it Lord, that I should boast • save in the death of Christ my God; • all the vain things that charm me most; • I sacrifice them to his blood.

  13. See from his head, his hands, his feet, • sorrow and love flow mingled down; • did e’re such love and sorrow meet, • or thorns compose so rich a crown.

  14. Were the whole realm of nature mine, • that were an offering far too small: • love so amazing, so divine, • demands my soul, my life, my all. © Isaac Watts 1674-1748 CCLI 202156

  15. The Proclamation of the Cross • The cross is carried into the midst of the church. • Three stations are made and three times we say: • We adore you, O Christ and we bless you. • Because, by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

  16. Prayer before the Cross Priest: Let your bearing to one another arise out of your life in Christ Jesus. He humbled himself and in obedience accepted the death of the cross. God bestowed on him the name above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord.

  17. All: • Father, • hear our prayer and forgive us. • Unstop our ears • that we may receive the gospel of the cross. • Open our eyes • that we may see your glory • in the face of your Son, • that your truth may make us whole. • Fill our hearts with your love • that we may love one another • for Christ's sake. • Father, forgive us. Amen.

  18. The Cross We come to the cross one by one or with others.…. We may kneel, touch, kiss, pray before the cross….

  19. O sacred head sore wounded, • with grief and shame weighed down; • O kingly head surrounded • with thorns your only crown; • death’s shadows rise before you, • the glow of life decays: • yet hosts of heaven adore you • and tremble as they gaze.

  20. What language shall I borrow • to praise you, heavenly friend, • for this your dying sorrow, • your mercy without end? • Such agony and dying! • Such love to sinners free! • O Christ, all grace supplying, • turn now your face on me.

  21. In this your bitter Passion, • good shepherd, think of me, • look on me with compassion, • unworthy though I be: • beneath your cross abiding • for ever would I rest, • in your dear love confiding, • and with your presence blessed.

  22. Lord, be my consolation, • my shield when death is near; • remind me of your Passion, • be with me when I fear. • My eyes shall then behold you, • upon your cross shall dwell, • my heart by faith enfold you; • and who dies thus, dies well. © Paul Gerhardt1607-76, from Salve caput cruentatum attrib. Bernard of Clairvaux 1091-1153 tr. James Waddell Alexander 1804-59 and others CCLI 202156

  23. The Intercession The response : Let us pray to the Lord, Lord hear our prayer.

  24. And now, O Father, mindful of the love that bought us, once for all, on Calvary’s hill, and having with us him who pleads above, we here present, we bring before you still that only offering perfect in your eyes, the one true, pure, immortal sacrifice

  25. Look, Father, look on his anointed face, and only look on us as found in him; look not on our mis-usings of your grace, our prayer so halting, and our faith so dim: for now between our sins and their reward we set the passion of your Son our Lord.

  26. . And so we come; O draw us to your feet, most patient Saviour, who can love us still; and by this food, so awesome and so sweet, deliver us from every touch of ill; in your own service make us glad and free, and may we in your presence ever be. © William Bright 182-1901 alt. CCLI202156

  27. The Table The Lord be with you And also with you Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give God thanks and praise

  28. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heavenand earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

  29. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again

  30. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen

  31. Our Father in heaven hallowed be Your name Your kingdom come Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us, Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen

  32. Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

  33. Jesus, Lamb of God • have mercy on us. • Jesus, bearer of our sins, • have mercy on us. • Jesus, Redeemer of the world, • grant us Your peace.

  34. Behold the Lamb of God • who takes away the sin of the world: • happy are those who are called to his supper • Lord, I am not worthy to receive You • but only say the word and I shall be healed.

  35. Time for silence, quiet prayer & reflection Holy Communion

  36. We sing the praise of him who died, • Of him who died upon the cross; • The sinners’ hope though all deride: • For this we count the world but loss.

  37. Inscribed upon the cross we see • In shining letters, ‘God is love’; • He bears our sins upon the tree; • He brings us mercy from above.

  38. The cross – it takes our guilt away, • It holds the fainting spirit up, • It cheers with hope the gloomy day • And sweetens every bitter cup:

  39. It makes the coward spirit brave • And nerve the feeble arm for fight; • It takes all terror from the grave • And gilds the bed of death with light;

  40. The balm of life, the cure of woe, • The measure and the pledge of love, • The sinner’s refuge here below, • The angels’ theme in heaven above. © Thomas Kelly 1769 – 1855 alt CCLI 202156
