Who are we and what do we do? • We provide a range of general hospital services for people in Salford. • We provide a wide range of specialist services for people all over the UK who need expert help with brain, bone, kidney, intestine or skin conditions.
Who are we and what do we do? On an average day at the hospital, we: • See around 1,000 outpatients. • Treat 192-250 patients in A&E. • Care for 840 inpatients. • Dispense 1,240 prescriptions containing over 99,000 doses of medicine.
What is a Foundation Trust? • NHS Foundation Trusts are firmly part of the NHS and subject to NHS standards, performance ratings and systems of inspection. Their primary purpose is to provide NHS care to NHS patients according to NHS quality standards and principles. Department of Health

What is a Foundation Trust? • They have unique governance arrangements and are accountable to local people, who can become members and governors. Each Foundation Trust has a duty to consult and involve a council of governors (comprising patients, staff, members of the public and partner organisations) in the strategic planning of the organisation. What is a Foundation Trust? • They are set free from central government control and are no longer performance managed by health authorities. As self-standing, self-governing organisations, NHS Foundation Trusts are free to determine their own future. Department of Health
What is a Foundation Trust? • They have new financial freedoms and can raise capital from both the public and private sectors within borrowing limits based on affordability. • They can retain financial surpluses to invest in the delivery of new NHS services. Department of Health
What is a Foundation Trust? • Foundation Trusts are overseen by Monitor. Department of Health Monitor regulates NHS foundation trusts, making sure they are well-managed and financially strong so that they can deliver excellent healthcare for patients.
Our Membership • Members Members may be patients, carers, staff or the public from anywhere in the country. • Council of Governors The Council of Governors is responsible for representing the interests of members, influencing the Trust’s plans and appointing the Chair, Non-Executive Directors and the Trust Auditors. • Board of Directors The Board of Directors is responsible for the day-to-day management and running of the Trust.

Hospital Redevelopment • £200 million hospital building redevelopment due to be completed in 2012. • The project will see 36,000 square metres of state of the art accommodation vastly improving facilities for staff and patients. • Phase 1 of the redevelopment is the construction of a multi-storey car park for 1,100 cars and an academic block.
Hospital Redevelopment As well as the Car Park and Academic block, once the new hospital is completed it will provide: • A new A&E department • An emergency admittance unit • New facilities for Urology, Renal and Intestinal Failure services • A total of 242 new hospital beds • A new main entrance for patients and visitors on Eccles Old Road
Quality Improvement During April 2008 the Trust launched its Quality Improvement Strategy. The role of the Quality Directorate is to: • Advise the Board on strategic issues relating to quality. • Provide expertise in quality improvement methods. • Build internal capability for quality improvement. • Connect the organisation to external partners.
Quality Improvement Secretary of State Alan Johnson visited the Trust to launch an innovative and leading edge Quality Improvement Strategy aimed at improving the safety and quality of services to compare with the best in the NHS.
