Eat More, Not Less! An informational PowerPoint about the importance of eating and malnutrition MikaylaLaube
Myth #1: Somepeople believe that the best way to stay thin is to keep yourself from eating food. The truth is, this is completely FALSE! Yes you will stay thin, but your body will be very deprived of all of the essential nutrients it needs to stay healthy. The results of starving: Thin, yes. Healthy, NO.
Calories • Calories are not a bad thing if eaten in proper proportions • Too many calories WILL lead to weight gain • BUT not enough and you are under nourished • Calories are a measurement of energy, so everyone needs them!
When you don’t eat, your body doesn’t get these required nutrients:
Carbohydrates • Sugars: one type of carbohydrate that should not be overly consumed if one wants to stay healthy because it does not supply the body with anything but energy ex) candy, chips, chocolate etc.
Carbohydrates • Starches: one type of carbohydrate that fills you up and supplies you with a healthy energy supply ex) bread, pasta, cereal
Carbohydrates • Fiber: makes you feel full with empty calories, so you get nutrition without excess weight gain. As well it helps clean your digestive system ex) fruits, vegetables
Without carbohydrates as well as proteins and lipids you would have no energy. Yes without eating them you will have your skinny body, but you’ll be too tired to do anything with it!
Vitamins & Minerals One should remember that along with those essential nutrients, they also need vitamins and minerals if they don’t want to become malnourished. People need: • Vitamin A • Vitamin B • Vitamin C • Vitamin D • Calcium • Iron Vitamin C Calcium
Malnutrition When the body is experiencing malnutrition because it has not been supplied with the needed nutrients/vitamins, it can obtain harmful health problems
Symptoms • Dizziness • Fatigue • Weight loss • Weakening of the muscles, which then begin to waste away • Increased vulnerability to infection • Delayed wound healing • Irritability • Brittle nails • Dry and flaky skin • Persistent diarrhoea • Depression
Overeating It should be noted that under eating is not the only cause of malnutrition, it can also be acquired through over eating.
overeating Overeating can cause over absorption of nutrients. This usually means a person is consuming too much sugar, protein, and carbohydrates and ultimately too many calories. Because of this people experience a weight gain!
The key The key to avoiding malnutrition is eating just the right amount. Make sure you consume all of the nutrients needed to stay healthy, just don’t eat too many!!!
