WCL324 Thin Clients, from Building to Deployment and Management Alexa Barron
Session Objectives and Takeaways • Session Objective(s): • Be able to articulate Microsoft’s position on thin clients • Understand Microsoft’s Thin Client offerings • Learn about the new Windows ThinPC offering • Key Takeaway: Microsoft provides a wide range of offerings for thin client needs
Microsoft's Position on Thin Clients When and how to think about thin clients as part of your desktop strategy
Thin Client Growth Interest in VDI is fueling interest in thin clients 11.5M units by 2015
What Is a "Thin Client"? • Examples of Thin Clients Intent • Designed to always be connected to a server-based desktop A Thin Client Device Wyse, HP, iGel Device Profile • Has a low profile and footprint: • Smaller CPU, RAM than a typical PC • Very little (if any) local storage for data and applications • Uses less energy than a PC Operating System • Typically runs a light-weight embedded operating system such as Windows Embedded Standard • Any device capable of remote desktop connections (PCs, tablets, smartphones, etc) can also be used as a thin client.
When Is Thin Client an Option? Scenario Recommended Access Device Hybrid SBD Scenarios Local desktop + hosted desktop Local desktop + hosted applications If You Have Server-Based Desktops (SBD) Windows PC VDI / Sessions Unmanaged Devices Tablets, iPads, smartphones, employee owned PCs Device choice precedes SBD choice Unmanaged Device as Thin Client Pure SBD Scenarios No local desktop functionality required No local applications or data OR Thin Client Windows PC
Adopting Thin Clients: Microsoft’s Recommendation Deploy the Optimized desktop • For pure Server Based Desktop scenarios, choose the right thin client computing model for your organization Data & User Settings Choose the right architecture for your business priorities Try before you buy with WinTPC Experience thin clients without buying new hardware or additional VDA licensing Keep the option to revert back to PCs Customers evaluating Thin Client Computing VDI / Sessions Move to Windows Embedded devices when WinTPC hardware is decommissioned Applications Customers decided on thin clients • Built off the strong Windows 7 platform • Can be easily managed using the same set of System Center tools as the PC Identify the right scenarios for Server Based Desktops OperatingSystem & Browser Deploy Windows Embedded 7 thin clients

Challenges Managing Thin Clients Thin Clients may lack dependencies for full use of Config Manager Thin Clients can lack OS components needed for management software Specific OS components are required to run Configuration Manager 2007 client Embedded OEMs do not include OS components required for ConfigMgr 2007 by default Connecting Thin Clients to ConfigMgr 2007 • Thin Clients are often misidentified and grouped as a phone in management console • Need to manually configure and map the embedded devices Enhanced Write Filters are used to help maintain Thin Clients Enhanced Write Filters (EWF) prevent unauthorized changes on embedded devices If EWF is used, devices cannot remotely updated or managed with ConfigMgr 2007 Choice of not using EWF or managing embedded devices outside of ConfigMgr 2007
Introducing Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 • Extends the capabilities of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 to fully manage embedded devices • Enterprises can deploy, assess and update thin clients built on Windows Embedded Platforms/Windows Thin PC
Features and Benefits Ease of management: similar to PCs and Servers Software Distribution and Updates Automatically included into predefined collections by device type Devices with Write Filters can be updated Enhanced IT Infrastructure Insight and Control Extend System Center Configuration Manager 2007 console to Windows Embedded devices Provide richer inventory information unique to embedded devices Simplify and streamline thin client administration and compliance through easy provisioning Greater Device Integration Tailor Inventory: Thin Clients can come pre-populated with hardware inventory extensions providing greater insight into configuration Tailor Imaging: Simplify integration of custom imaging extensions through a common interface
