  1. Motor Principle

  2. Current flowing through a loop in a magnetic field produces force in opposite directions on opposite sides of the loop • Tends to rotate the coil about its axis down Up

  3. Rotational Force (Torque)  = N I A B sin N – number of coils I – current A – area of coil B – magnetic field  - angle between coil and mag field

  4. Example • A circular coil of diameter 20cm contains 10 loops. The current in the coil is 3.0 A and the coil is in a 2.0T magnetic field. Determine the torque acting on the coil.

  5. Applications • Motor • Ammeter • Speaker

  6. Solenoids • Coil of wire • When current flows, creates a straight magnetic field • Called an electromagnet • Strength of magnetic field is • Proportional to current • Proportional to # of loops

  7. Strength of Electromagnet • Increased by adding a core material which is ferromagnetic - increases by a factor ( - magnetic permeability) B =  n I

  8. Example • What is the strength of a magnetic field produced by a 150 loop coil wrapped around an iron core ( = 2000) and carrying a current of 1.5 A?
