Curriculum 2.0 • First year implementation in 3rd grade. • Integrated across all subjects with Unifying Questions. • The third grade team works together to plan lessons to meet the needs of all students. • As a parent if you have questions please don't hesitate to post it on the question poster! The Wood Acres administration will be working hard to answer as many questions as they can.

Learning Skills Fun Friday Behavior Cards • Help student self-manage behavior • Used all day including brunch, recess, and specials • Fun Friday Letter Home used to inform parents when a card is lost Super Stars • Recognizes students who go above and beyond expectations Daily Class Meeting • Daily discussion of learning skills • Peace Day evaluation

Homework Policies • Third Grade homework will be: • no more than 45 minutes, Monday through Thursday • long term projects may be assigned over weekends • Math • Assigned Monday - Thursday, due the following day • Brought home and returned to school in the Take Home folder • Basic Facts practice – 5-10 minutes per night • Word Work • Assigned on Tuesdays, due on Thursdays (usually) • Independent Reading • At least 20 minutes per night • May occasionally be used to catch-up on guided reading books.

  9. Homework Notices • The Homework Notice is not a punishment. It is a system in place to help children learn independence and responsibility. • It also fosters communication between teacher, child, and parent. You will thank me one day! 

Grading Policy • GRADES ARE FEEDBACK (not rewards or punishments)! • Progress Report Cards • Distributed quarterly • Grades (ES, P, I, N, etc…) are used for the academic areas • Learning Skills in the areas of work habits and thinking and academic success skills are grade with DEM, PRG, N • Homework will not be graded. • Math homework: reviewed with students to allow for discussion • Word Work: checked for accuracy and effort • Long term projects • Rubrics used for grading will be included as part of project directions

A Typical Day in 3rd Grade 11:45 – 12:00ish Word Work • Third Grade program based on Month by Month Phonics • Five Word Fluency goals: • Students spell high frequency words that often do not meet the rules of spelling (Word Wall Words) • Students decode and spell one and two syllable words based on patterns from words they already know • Students develop a visual checking system and use a dictionary when unsure about which pattern looks right in words that may rhyme but do not follow the same spelling pattern • Students recognize “big” words as smaller word combined, looking for familiar chunks, compounds, prefixes, and suffixes • Students use cross checking while reading and a visual checking system while writing

A Typical Day in 3rd Grade 12:00 – 1:15 Reading • Whole group lessons on decoding, comprehension strategies, and written responses to literature • Literature Circles reinforce specific reading strategies geared to students’ individual needs • Independent reading foster through Literary Letters and Reading Log • Genres covered include realistic fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, plays, folktales, and poetry. • Critical thinking and shared-inquiry fostered through Junior Greats and William &Mary.

A Typical Day in 3rd Grade 2:00 – 2:50 Writing • Forms of Writing: Informative, Narrative, and Opinion • Students are instructed in the Six Traits of Writing: *Ideas * Organization *Word Choice * Voice *Sentence Fluency * Conventions Let’s take a look at your child’s letter as we discuss these traits. Students also evaluated on Process, Production, Research, and Use of Language 2:50 – 3:05 Class Meeting
