By: Joey, Daria, and Meredith EEG ERP evidence shows ALS patients exhibit attention deficits during auditory tasks (compared to age-matched healthy controls (Vieregge 1999) A 2009 study shows that patients were able to retain BCI control during periods of auditory distraction. (Friedrich 2012) ACHTUNG! ALS patients were compared to patients in vegetative and minimally conscious states and were found 100% responsive to the stimulus of their own name. (Perrin 2006) Studies show that preceding alpha waves can predict a subjects attentional performance. (Hanslmayr 2011) Subjects who got LESS sleep were statistically more likely to learn to use a P300 BCI (Guger 2009)
Strategies • More information needed: • Check Birbaumer’s paper regarding sleep patterns for CLIS patients for quality/types of sleep and check alpha-delta waves comparatively • Check list of stimuli (questions) to ensure that there is no ambiguity • Assess attention through: • Reading alpha waves prior to questions • Possible BCI aphasia? • Future studies: • Try mathematical T/F statements instead of verbal? (Higher brain activity upon incorrect equation e.g. 2+2=5)
