What and Why. What? • Acomputer application that performs a task that is usually performed by a human expert. • Part of a general category of computer applications known as artificial intelligence . • Data is gathered from as many experts as possible. Why? • To reduce labour. • Helps: a) Diagnose Human Illnesses b) Make Financial Forecast c ) Car Engine Fault Diagnosis d) Mineral Prospecting
Mineral Prospecting • Differs from Medical Diagnosis because of the type of data that is worked with. • Other Forms Of data that can be used: • Satellite - Data can be inputted to show pictures of Earth’s surface. - Can help show outline of the ground that isn’t visible. • Sensors- Can be positioned on the ground to sense seismic activity. • Geological Surveys – Sensors are placed to sense length and strength of shockwaves. -Data collected can be used to create a map of what is under the surface. • Expert systems can use all the data to make a prediction of what particular minerals can be found in that area. • The higher the percentage of mineral in the are, the higher the likelihood of finding the particular mineral.
Car engine Fault Diagnosis • faults in cars are collected by experienced mechanics and stored in the knowledge base of the system. • Cars are brought to the garage and details of faults are inputted by the through answering questions through HCI(Human-Computer Interaction) • The inputted data will be processed using the knowledge base to determine the problem. • Cars with processors can be directly connected to the expert system so that faults can be downloaded. • The expert system can be connected to the exhaust system and the gasses will be automatically analysed.
Chess Computers • Chess-Playing computers are expert systems. • It’s impossible predict all the moves, so better chess computers are programmed with strategies. • Position of the system and players are quantified so that the system can configure which move is possible and which move is the best. • When the computer is beaten, they will analyse the moves so that the same mistake would not be made again.
