Board of Health Agenda Put together by Health Officer and Chair: • Report from Board Chair- recent meetings, concerns or issues • Monthly statistics – births, communicable disease trends and emerging disease issues • Report from Health Officer – past activities of note, upcoming events, projects reviews, Environmental program update, grant reviews, and conference and meeting reports.
Board of Health Agenda • Monthly staff presentation on staff projects or grants, CHIP, strategic plan review or student nurse projects. • Approvals – budget, staff replacement, policy development and review, resolutions, and contract approvals. • Education – disease stats and trends, public health issues, political concerns, program changes, funding expectations from outside sources and requests for participation in planning, projects or exercises.

Qualities of an Effective Board Member • Be aware of the bigger picture- seek out information on public health issues, remember you are representing the viewpoint of your constituents, be aware of what is happening in zoning and planning in our area • Be willing to make a stand on public health issues even if it means disagreeing with someone • Be aware of what the health department can do for citizens. Do not make promises without knowing the details and how long it takes to make a “fix”, if it is possible. • Willing to get involved-come to WALHDAB, conferences, WALHDAB State Board • We aware of their role with department staff and day to day operations; they set policy and budget

Accreditation – Domain 12 • What is the Governing Entity's authority and description. • Chapter 251 Local Health Officials: Establishing the size, description, powers and duties of the Board of Health.
Domain 12 • Communication with the Board of Health or Governing Entity on: • The Health Department needs to keep the governing body updated on the department’s overall legal authority, obligations and responsibilities and the entity's supporting role. • Communicate to the entity about their responsibility during their orientation.
