  2. Facts • Tobacco is found in cigarettes, chewing tobacco. • Cigarette filters do not stop all the tar and chemicals found in cigarettes. • Women develop lung damage earlier in life than men. • If current patterns continue, over 5 million people under 18 will die prematurely

  3. Nicotine • Nicotine is the main drug in all forms of tobacco. Nicotine acts as both a stimulant and a sedative. It is one of the most heavily used addictive drugs in the U.S. • The nicotine in tobacco is an addictive drug that acts on several parts of the body. Once addicted, it becomes difficult, but not impossible, to quit using smokeless tobacco or to stop smoking.

  4. Snuff • Finely cut, processed tobacco which the user places in between the cheek and gum • The gums recognize the nicotine and absorb it through the membranes of the mouth

  5. Bidis • Cigarettes made in India that contain more than 3x the amount of nicotine and more than 5x the amount of tar than regular cigarettes • Looks similar to a marijuana joint. • A pack ranges from $1 - $3.50

Health Problems Smokers or smokeless tobacco users can develop — • Bad breath • Brown, stained teeth • Ground-down teeth, • Black tongue • Gum disease • Loss of teeth and receding gums • Cancers of the cheek, esophagus, lip, palate and tongue. • Spontaneous abortion • Heart disease • Premature birth

Stats • Smoking causes 400,000 deaths per year in US • $75 billion in medical expenditures • $80 billion indirect cost • Five years after quitting, the risk of stroke is reduced to that of a non-smoker • Of the 45 million Americans who smoke, 70 percent say they want to quit • One in every five deaths is attributed to tobacco use • Only 2.5 percent of smokers are able to quit on their own (quitline program.)
