Motivating Students “We are becoming a visually motivated society. For many, understanding of the world is being accomplished, not through words, but by reading images” (Lester,2006:415).

WHAT does the software do? • Allows you to record everything you do on the screen, along with a voice-over and/or image of instructor. • It records the desktop on which you have placed the essay in either Word or PDF. • Converts the recorded file into various formats depending on the output capacity i.e. email, flashdisk, Facebook, website, cd/dvd
Qualitative Data: 1st Essay-WP Overall Class improvement mean/average + 17.9%
Benefits of the Technology • Feedback is both auditory and visual • Highly motivating for students • More relevant and detailed comments • Good rapport between teacher & student • Student feels privileged having their teacher’s voice and advice at their fingertips • Easier to decode than lengthy written comments for L2 learners • All Students excited and willing to participate • ubiquitous “facebook” usage translates to wider coverage & no technology hurdles for students
Hurdles to Overcome • competent usage of software • funding for Camtasia $179 education licence (Screentoaster, Faststone, BBFlashback, Camstudio, Captivate, Fraps, Hypercam: none as good or as easy to use as Camtasia) • potential system conflicts (Mac versus Windows, Office 2007 versus 2003, PDF, RaR decompression AVi-MP4-Slow upload times etc) • Potential students as “Luddites” (rare)
