Objectives and Indicators • Students will understand traits that may help or hinder survival in a given environment. • ILOs • Observe simple objects, patterns, and events and report their observations. • Use data to construct a reasonable conclusion. • Read Informational science texts

  3. Adaptations ENGAGE/EXPLORE: Students participate in bird beak simulation and do a bird matching/sort activity. EXPLAIN: Reading of adaptation text, class discussion and view octopus adaptation video clips ELABORATE:Draw an animal activity-using clue cards, create the animal described. EVALUATE: Identifying adaptations and what would happen if the habitat changed-writing activity in notebook.

  4. Bird Beaks At each table (or create stations) • Students predict which model beak will work best for picking up: marshmallow, beans, water. • Students have 20 seconds to pick up “food” and record in data chart in notebook. • Repeat for each type of “food.” • Conclusion: Which type of beak is best? It depends on what kind of food a bird eats.

  5. Name an Adaptation • What is the animal or plant? • What is the animal’s habitat? • What is one adaptation that you observe? • How does that adaptation help the animal or plant? • What would happen if the animal or plant had to move to a new habitat?
