  1. TAS Upgrade for HL LHC&Radiation Background in the CMS Hall(for pp source) BRIL CMS Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  2. - Why TAS is very important for the CMS radiation environment?- Because TAS is the main source of scattered radiation in the CMS hall.Simple analysis of the radiation sources in the CMS hall - four angular intervals for particles from IP5 (with correspondent parts of VC): • Simulations: • DPMJET III as a source • MARS’109 cascades • Particles: h & n • – hadrons with E > 14.5 MeV • (mostly neutrons); • - neutrons with E < 14.5 MeV a1 – TAS angular region a2 – HF … a3 – EE … a4 – EB … Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  3. Control Zone 1 (ME4 plane) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  4. Control Zone 2 (around HF and Rotation Shielding) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  5. Control Zone 3 (around HF, Rotation Shielding, and Blockhouse near hall wall ) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  6. Control Zone 4 (around Blockhouse near hall back wall ) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  7. Control Zone 5 (around Blockhouse) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  8. Control Zone 6 (around MB) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  9. Control Zone 7 (around ME) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  10. TAS: Nominal vs HL-LHC HL-LHC: Version 1 Version 91 (Nominal) TAS goes up to R = 30 mm, near VC up to 50 mm, Q1 coil up to 59 mm. First (naïve) feeling: background should be go down, because TAS intercepts less number of secondaries from IP Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  11. Nominal vs HL-LHC (1)black:91, blue:01 --- solid: n, dash: h Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  12. Why 01 > 91 ? (b) (a) 01 91 a) Showers starting on the low-R elements (VC part) gives more in Q1 region with new TAS. b) The same for showers starting on the edges (in low-R region) of TAS itself (“edge effect”) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  13. Setup 02:just remove cylindrical part of VC (it also stops to produce background!) Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  14. 91vs01vs02 n 02 h Edge effect still exists for hadrons around blockhouse Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino

  15. Resume • New TAS (and new VC!) will improve radiation background conditions in the CMS hall (inside factor 1.5-2). Igor Azhgirey – BRIL CMS & IHEP Protvino
