American Public Works Association APWA is an international and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies and individuals dedicated to developing and supporting the people, agencies, and organizations that plan, build, maintain, and improve our communities. Working together, APWA and its 29,000 members across 63 chapters in the US and Canada contribute to a higher and sustainable quality of life.
What is Sustainability? The term sustainability as we know it today was coined in reference to sustainable development in the paper Our Common Future, released by the Brundtland Commission in October 1987. Sustainable development “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
What is Sustainability? Sustainability can be understood through a ‘Triple Bottom Line’ framework, which has three parts: economic, social and environmental – also called the three Ps (people, planet and profit) or the "three pillars of sustainability". The term ‘Triple Bottom Line’ was coined by John Elkington in 1994.
Why is Sustainability Important? The 2015 Local Government Sustainability Practices survey was conducted by International City/County Management Association, the Sustainable Communities and Small Town and Rural Planning Divisions of the American Planning Association, Binghamton University, Cornell University, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, with 1,899 local governments responding.
Why is Sustainability Important? • 76% indicated that they had responded to a major disaster during the past 15 years. Among those, 53% had dealt with a flood, 51% with a blizzard or ice storm, and 24% with a hurricane. • For 88%, lack of funding is a significant or very significant factor hindering local sustainability efforts.
APWA and Sustainability The APWA Center for Sustainability (C4S) was created in 2008 with four goals. • ENABLE APWA to become the driving force for sustainability in public works management. • CREATE an integrated vision for the future through sustainable public works management. • BUILD an APWA structure that motivates and enables public works practitioners to act more sustainably. • DEVELOP a generation of public works leaders with strong sustainability credentials and commitment.
APWA Center for Sustainability (C4S) The APWA Center for Sustainability (C4S) provides tools and resources to APWA members and community leaders that allow decision makers to implement more sustainable, economically sound, and socially responsible long-term solutions.
