  2. ECE 315 Entire Course (Ash) • ECE 315 Week 1 DQ 1 Oral Written Language • ECE 315 Week 1 DQ 2 The Human Brain • ECE 315 Week 1 Journal • ECE 315 Week 2 DQ 1 Second Language Acquisition • ECE 315 Week 2 DQ 2 Language Development in Infants and Toddlers • ECE 315 Week 2 Applying Theoretical Perspective to Curriculum Content • ECE 315 Week 3 DQ 1 Language Development in Preschoolers and Kindergarteners • ECE 315 Week 3 DQ 2 Early Literacy • ECE 315 Week 3 Final Paper Rough Draft • ECE 315 Week 4 DQ 1 Kindergarten Curricular Goals • ECE 315 Week 4 DQ 2 Phonics Controversy

  3. ECE 315 Week 1 DQ 1 Oral Written Language (Ash • Oral/Written Language. Consider the five aspects of language knowledge and explain how their development contributes to a child’s success in school, at home and in social situations. Discuss how both delayed development and fluency relate to the acquisition of written language knowledge. Explain how language development will affect your methodologies in teaching.

  4. ECE 315 Week 1 DQ 2 The Human Brain (Ash) • The Human Brain. Read Chapter 2 of the class text. Our text states, “The human brain appears to be “prewired” for the development of language” (nature) and “It is only through interaction in the environment that language is acquired” (nurture). In what ways does brain development research document the influence of both nature and nurture on language development? Which do you think is more crucial to language development and acquisition? Why?

  5. ECE 315 Week 1 Journal (Ash) • Think of a situation where null value should be allowed and a situation where it should not be allowed. What are the consequences of inappropriate null settings?

  6. ECE 315 Week 2 Applying Theoretical Perspective to Curriculum Content (Ash) • Applying Theoretical Perspective to Curriculum Content. Go to MindMeister and create a free account. • You will be creating a Mindmap to share with your classmates using MindMeister. Your map will show the following theoretical perspectives: behaviorist, nativist, cognitive developmentalist, and interactionist. Incorporate a brief overview of each into your Mindmap and identify the theorist-researcher associated with each perspective. When this portion of your Mindmap is complete, share your Mindmap with your classmates by exporting your file to the Doc Sharing forum.

  7. ECE 315 Week 2 DQ 1 Second Language Acquisition (Ash) • Second Language Acquisition. Read Chapter 3 of the class text and any recommended readings. According to Otto (2010), “Acquisition of a second language involves the same processes, interactions, and aspects of language knowledge as the development of the first language” (p.89). That acquisition can be enhanced in the early childhood education. Taking into consider how acquisition of linguistic diversity can be enhanced, view the video Wendehack Video 2 (http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?&) and identify the strategies used by the teacher to address the needs of the non-native speaking English students.

  8. ECE 315 Week 2 DQ 2 Language Development in Infants and Toddlers (Ash) • Language Development in Infants and Toddlers. Read Chapters 4 and 5 of the class text and explore the recommended websites: • PBS Parents: http://www.pbs.org/parents/ • Babysigns: https://www.babysigns.com/index.cfm?id=72 • According to Otto (2010), “During infancy and toddlerhood, children’s language competencies develop in five areas of language knowledge: phonetic, semantic, syntactic, morphemic and pragmatic” (p.126). Identify a minimum of two developmentally appropriate activities for infants and two for toddlers that would enhance language knowledge. Explain which area or areas of language knowledge the activities support and the expected outcome of each. Share any experience you are aware of that effected your own or your child’s language acquisition as an infant or toddler.

  9. ECE 315 Week 3 DQ 1 Language Development in Preschoolers and Kindergarteners (Ash) • Language Development in Preschoolers and Kindergarteners. Read Chapter 6, 7 and 8 of the class text, as well as the articles from ProQuest. • Language knowledge develops during the preschool years to prepare students for success in kindergarten and beyond. Preschool education and the government funding that supports it has been a consistent topic of debate since its conception.

  10. ECE 315 Week 3 Final Paper Rough Draft (Ash) • ECE 315 Week 3 Final Paper Rough Draft • Final Paper Rough Draft. Submit a brief outline of the following: • a. Strategies and methods you will be presenting in your final project. • b. The theoretical perspective you will use to support your choices. • c. The curriculum content you will be using to incorporate your chosen methods. • d. Modifications for students learning a second language and for students with special needs. • e. Grade level or developmental level being addressed.

  11. ECE 315 Week 4 DQ 1 Kindergarten Curricular Goals (Ash) • The following assignment is based on the database environment chosen and discussed in the Week Two Individual Assignment. Use a Microsoft® Visio® diagram to create a detailed ERD using the data specificationsnoted in the Week Two Individual Assignment. Make any necessary changes provided in your faculty’s feedback. Use a Microsoft® Access® database to create the preliminary database tables, columns with data types, primary keys, and relationships. Kindergarten Curricular Goals. On page 261 of our text, Otto (2010) lists the following five curricular goals: • 1. Increase children’s ability to communicate orally in instructional and conversational settings. • 2. Encourage an awareness of the purposes of reading and writing. • 3. Increase vocabulary through conceptual development. • 4. Increase listening comprehension.

  12. ECE 315 Week 4 DQ 2 Phonics Controversy (Ash) • Phonics Controversy. During the primary years, children’s language development increases in amount and complexity. They are exposed to more direct instruction of phonetic, semantic, syntactic , morphemic and pragmatic knowledge. Some believe their natural development may be stinted by the regimented rote memorization of phonics and the manipulation of language, while others believe a systematic approach, such as phonics instruction, is the best way to increase language acquisition. The controversy over whole language and phonics has developed over the past twenty years.

  13. ECE 315 Week 5 Developmental Curriculum Paper (Ash) • In your own words, describe the nature and purpose of the normalization process. Provide some examples from sources other than the readings. • Developmental Curriculum Paper • Your final assignment for ECE315 will be to develop curriculum content that implements strategies and methods that enhance language acquisition. Select a specific developmental level for your unit of study. In a narrative format, you will identify and discuss the topic areas listed below, referencing your textbook and three additional scholarly resources. • 1. Grade or developmental level being addressed • 2. Strategies and methods

  14. ECE 315 Week 5 DQ 1 Assessment Referrals (Ash) • Assessment Referrals. What considerations must be made before making a referral for additional assessment in determining whether a student has a communication disorder or not? What do you believe are two strengths of observational assessment? What are the limitations? As a teacher, would you prefer to use a checklist for assessment or an anecdotal record? Why? Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Support your claims with evidence from the text, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.
