Background • May 14, 2007, Best Practices Committee Meeting: • http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BestPracticesCommittee_2007_05_14 • Featured Best Practices: Documentation of Successful Implementations That Are Based on Standards: • http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BestPracticesCommittee_2007_05_14#nid3KFC • How to Make Notetaking, Listening, and Meetings More Productive (Compiled by the Secretariat): • http://colab.cim3.net/file/work/BPC/2007-05-14/BPCBP05142007.doc
Background • In a world where most are knowledge workers, we need to take in information, synthesize it, and follow a process to set goals and work to meet them (“it is all about reuse”). • The number one productivity tip is to do something you are passionate about because when you are enthusiastic about something you are better at it and don’t mind trying harder and putting more time into it. • The key is to take the desired outcome (value) and divide it by the actions (cost) and you will have the return on investment (time) to get to the desired outcome with fewer wasted actions.
Plan of Action • Getting the Most Out of the Summer Workshops: • (1) Synthesize, Set Goals, and Work to Meet Them. • (2) Identify Which Community of Practice (Passion) Should Be Involved. • (3) Assess the Return on Investment for Each Goal.
June 20, 2007, Workshop • Advancing Virtual Organizing: Potentials and Realities from Scientific Grid to Citizen-Service Communities: • Traditional grid computing is being replaced by “fabric applications” that are more scalable, agile, and cost-effective for large-scale data processing, time-critical, applications (e.g. Google): • See 4th SOA for E-Government Conference, October 1-2, 2007: • http://www.mitre.org/register/soa/ • Academic Cyberinfrastructures Are Being Challenged: • Users just want “Bandwidth and Storage” to use their own applications, Google Apps, etc. See SOA CoP/IONA Jump Start Kit. • Trans-Enterprise Service Grid: • Needs to support both SOAP and REST Protocols (see SOA CoP). • CaBIG has encountered a scalability problem with Ontology Collaboration and is exploring the use of Semantic Wikis! • See Nanoinformatics Pilot for NSF by SICoP: • http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BrandNiemann#nid3L6H
July 17-18, 2007, Workshop • Building the Way Forward Together: Towards Stable Meaning and Records Preservation in Information-Sharing: • SOA CoP Demo Use Case for Record Management System: • See 4th SOA for E-Government Conference, October 1-2, 2007: • http://www.mitre.org/register/soa/ • Use of ECMS (e.g. at US EPA): • If you create or receive an e-mail message and determine that it is a record, you should file it in the Electronic Content Management System (ECMS): • A complete e-mail record is a combination of the e-mail itself, the responses, and any attachments to the e-mail. • See for example: IT Quarterly Forum on E-Discovery at http://www.cio.gov/itqf (There is a question as to whether this will be acceptable to the legal system or not). • Ontology Community Should Build Knowledgebases for RMS: • See SICoP Pilots at http://web-services.gov
August 14, 2007, Workshop • Science.gov and WorldWideScience.org: • Scientists need to Locate (Google), Collaborate (Wiki), and Integrate (Semantic Wiki): • See Nanoinformatics Pilot for NSF by SICoP: • http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BrandNiemann#nid3L6H • Google does index/search scientific databases and journals and see “Google 2.0 Embraces the Semantic Web!”: • http://www.gcn.com/online/vol1_no1/44290-1.html • Mapping Science: • Work with Professor Borner on Scientific and Statistical Data Visualization and Exploratory Data Analysis with Federal Database (Professor Dan Carr, GMU), and Map Overlays for Data Integration (GIS) (see next slide). • See Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21st Century, National Science Foundation, Cyberinfrastructure Council, March 2007, page 22 (data, metadata, and ontologies) and page 34 (SOA and Web-services): • http://www.nsf.gov/od/oci/CI_Vision_March07.pdf
Request from Professor Katy Borner • 1. Nanoinformatics Pilot for NSF (see URL in slide 8): Locate, Collaborate, and Integrate (that ended up in Patricia Hilton's schematic of the Workshop!) • 2.
