Definition and Components • Components of vehicles drive system • Major components • Engine • Transmission • Drive shafts • Differentials
Engine • Burns fuel and converts energy to motion • Many types of engines • Most cars use internal combustion engine • Also use 4 stroke combustion cycle
Transmission • 2 types of transmission • Every car possesses a transmission • Gear ration between engine changes during acceleration and deceleration • Transmission allows you to change gears • Change gear so engine stay below redline on rpm meter
Drive Shaft • Used to turn differentials • Connects the transmission to the differentials • Runs perpendicular to the axles • In 4X4 it runs through differential in the center • no drive shaft in front wheel drive
Differentials • Has three jobs • Aims engine power at wheels • Acts as final gear reduction • Allows wheels to rotate at different speeds • Helps a car turn • No differential will cause wheels to lock together
Conclusion • Powertrain consists of all the components of a vehicle drive system • Is comprised of: • Engine • Transmission • Drive Shaft • Differentials
