SmogProg “Towards operational smog forecasts using NRT satellite measurements” Aim: Improve the Dutch Smog Forecast (Smog forecasting is a legal task of RIVM) SmogProg: Collaboration RIVM, KNMI and TNO
SmogProg: approach • Definition of demands: RIVM Smog team • Outreach to customers of the forecast and ask for feedback • High resolution chemistry and transport model (Lotos/Euros) • Data assimilation of surface O3 data (NL, EEA Ozone web) • Data assimilation of tropospheric NO2 columns (OMI) • Web based graphical interface to Smog team and Public • First operational tests: this summer
SmogProg: expected improvements • Quality • more accurate forecasts, especially at the beginning and end of smog episodes • Spatial resolution • a map in stead of 3 regions • Communication • Like the weather forecasts: show developments on a map • Scientific understanding • Understand major contributing factors • Abatement strategies
SmogProg: July 2005 episode, July 16 to 20. Model results with and without assimilation of Dutch groundbased monitoring network data
July 18th, 2005 Without assimilation With assimilation
