Ethics in Engineering • One of the most widely respected professions in the world • The public extends blind trust to engineers • Expected to protect people from harm through application of special knowledge 4
Encountering Ethical Situations • Application of expert knowledge carries responsibility • The public trusts fire protection professionals to act in good faith • Ethical dilemmas: situations in which pressure is placed upon an individual to do something that is not ethically proper, or when it is not immediately obvious which option would be ethically proper 5
Responsibilities of a Fire Protection Professional • Personal values: values obtained from parents, peers, mentors, television, film, the media, the community, and schools • Company values: values that require a fire protection professional to behave in a way that would meet the goals of, and bring credit to, the company 6
Responsibilities of a Fire Protection Professional (con’t.) • Societal values: values related to the public expectation that • All fire protection professionals competently discharge their responsibilities • Ensure the safety of all who enter a building protected by a fire protection system • Client’s value system: values of the client that demand a code-compliant fire protection system at the lowest price
Responsibilities of a Fire Protection Professional (con’t.) • Values of the fire protection profession: values summarized in the Code of Ethics for NICET-Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (see Figure 2-1, Page 54) and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) Code of Ethics for Engineers (see Figure 2-2, Page 55) 8
Professional Standards of Conduct • Technicians for fire protection, fire alarm, and architectural or engineering firms should seek certification with NICET • Practitioners of fire protection technology can be certificated in one of four grades • Many AHJs require a minimum level of certification for individuals performing layout or quality assurance review 9
Legal/Ethical Conflicts • Legal/ethical conflicts: disagreements related to the absence of congruence between system of laws and system of ethical values • The rapid growth of technological development causes a problem with congruence of laws and perceived ethical behavior • Conflicts between laws and the code of ethics make it harder to know how to behave ethically 10
Resolving Ethical Dilemmas • Rationalization: an attempt to justify an action that is known to be wrong • Whistle-blowing: an external action in which an individual exposes a situation perceived to be unethical 11
