Hydraulic Machines Used in Fish Screens September, 2006 Ryan L. McCormick, P.E. Oregon Dept of Fish & Wildlife
Purpose Use a hydraulic pump to drive a hydraulic cylinder or pitman arm to move screen cleaning components.
Advantages • Safety • Reliability • Electricity Not Required • Power Transmission Flexibility
Disadvantages • Higher Cost for Smaller Screens • Regular Maintenance • Compound Driving System
Breitenbush Screen • Construction Completed Jan, 2006 • Screened Flow is 35cfs • Water is primarily for hydroelectric with some domestic water use • Electrically driven hydraulic system • Designed by Mike Lambert (ODFW) & Conrad Zevely (Breitenbush Staff) • Hydraulics move gang wiper
Lost & Boulder • Construction Completed in November, 2005 • Screened Flow is 30 cfs • Water is primarily used for irrigation • Paddle wheel driven system • Designed by Suzanne Pollon, ODFW • Hydraulics move gang wiper
Dee Screen • Construction Completed in January 1999 • Screened Flow is 10 cfs • Water primarily used for irrigation • Paddle wheel driven system • Designed by Bernie Michaud (ODFW) & Mike Lambert (ODFW) • Hydraulics move gang wiper
Upper Herman Creek Screen • Construction Completed in Summer 2006 • Screen Flow is 20 cfs • Water is primarily used for fish rearing • Electrically driven hydraulic system • Designed by Mike Lambert (ODFW) & Lowell Watkins (ODFW) • Hydraulics move back wash spray nozzles
Future Projects • Estes Diversion on Powder River • Expected Completion – Fall 2007 • Screened Water is 85 cfs • Electrically Driven Hydraulic System • Type: V-Screen Gang Wiper
Future Projects (cont’d) • Page Springs Dam, West Canal, on Donner und Blitzen River • Expected Completion – Spring 2007 • Screened Water is 60 cfs • Electrically Driven Hydraulic System • Type: V-Screen Gang Wiper
