The Common Core State Standards Initiative • In 2009, the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association for Best Practices committed to developing a set of standards that would help prepare students for success in college and career. • In September, 2009 College and Career Readiness Standards were released. These became the foundation for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). • State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards on August 2, 2010.
What are the CCSS? • Rigorous, research-based standards for English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12. • Literacy standards for History/Science/Technical Subjects • Designed to prepare the nation’s students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and the workforce. • Internationally benchmarked to ensure that students will be globally competitive. • A collaborative effort that builds on the best of current state standards.
Why did California adopt the CCSS? To ensure that our students are: • Meeting college and work expectations • Prepared to succeed in a global economy and society • Provided with rigorous content and application of higher knowledge thinking through higher order thinking skills

College and Career Readiness Standards for Reading Correspond to the College and Career Readiness anchor stand organized in four key areas: 1. Key Ideas and Details 2. Craft and Structure 3. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 4. Range of reading and Level of Text Complexity

SMARTER Summative Assessments • Computer-adaptive • Grade 11: Up to six performance events in ELA/Math • Combination of computer and human scoring
Common Core Significant Milestones November 2012: Revised ELD & Science standards available Spring 2014: Field testing of summative assessments August 2, 2010: SBE adopts Common Core State Standards in English & Math Spring 2013: Pilot testing of summative assessments Spring 2015: Administer operational summative assessment November 1, 2012: Assessment Transition Plan due to State Legislature * pending SBE action
District Support • Trainings to establish common core language & develop skills as they relate to your subject: • Literacy • HOTS • Rigor Relevance Framework • Linked Learning • CTE Standards and Frameworks • Instructional Coaches on site
Site Support • Provide follow up and clarification after the trainings with the District Office. • Support linked learning (CTE teachers and core teacher link their curriculum for rigor and relevance) to develop lessons and performance tasks.
