Patient Education Committee • Recognized needs of patient population • Comprised of multidisciplinary members * Health Educators * Occupational Therapist * Nurses * Physicians * Pharmacists * Librarian
Patient Population at Olive View • Many indigent • Many Non-English speaking • Low literacy level
What has our committee accomplished? • Participates in Diabetes Education • Critiques Diabetes information • Assists with creating fact sheets/medications • Active role in “The Healthy Heart” • JCAHO compliance—forms, educational materials • Collaborates with various committees (Forms, Diabetes, Cardiology Department, Nursing Department)
More Accomplishments • Centralized resources throughout the institution • Collaborated to centralize departmental information resources (pamphlets, brochures) • Published “Valley Care Patient Education Resource Directory” • Manual is easy to use and distributed to each department—languages are noted
Accomplishments continued • Opened a patient education room/5th floor • Ongoing instructional activities for patients Conduct surveys to assess patients educational/learning needs • Librarian plays integral role in providing health information to patients and/or their families
What the librarian did and continues to do… • Beginning in 1999—applied for Outreach Awards through RML • Needs assessment • Began instructional sessions/outlying clinics • Promoted library and offered library assistance • Instructional use – Medline Plus • Ordered medical/nursing books in Spanish

What lies ahead • Plans to hold Medline Plus classes in Patient Education Room for patients/families • Working on grant for streamed videos English/Spanish for patient population in conjunction with Patient Ed Council • JCAHO--2005
