  1. Biofeedback therapy and its benefits over other conventional treatments biocybernaut01.journoportfolio.com/articles/biofeedback-therapy-and-its-benefits-over-other-conventional- treatments Biofeedback Therapy is defined as 'an interactive human psychological therapy based on the discipline of biofeedback'. Biofeedback therapy is the means of obtaining a greater understanding of various physical functions of the body, medically by the use of electrical or mechanical devices, and for a conscious purpose of being able to control the various systems of the body at will. Biofeedback Therapy was devised by Richard Bandler in the early 1970s as a means to teach people how to relax and cope better with their own bodies. In fact, it is a science that has been in existence for several decades now. Biofeedback Therapy uses the concept that an individual's biofeedback system can be manipulated by certain methods such as applying pressure to various parts of the body and is monitoring the changes that occur to the various systems. A number of ailments and conditions that individuals suffer from could be treated through biofeedback therapy. There are numerous documented cases in which patients have benefitted from biofeedback therapy, including chronic headaches, migraine headaches, chronic pain, muscle spasms, chronic fatigue, skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, irritable bowel syndrome, and asthma. Biofeedback may help to alleviate or even cure many of these conditions. The results of biofeedback therapy are not always immediate, as many times the ailment may need to be treated over a period of time before it begins to show signs of improvement. However, in some cases, patients report improvements after just a couple of sessions. To whom does biofeedback therapy is helpful Headaches are a common complaint among individuals suffering from back pain. Biofeedback may benefit those individuals who suffer from chronic headaches, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, depression, and stress. By adjusting the biofeedback settings on a patient's computer, the therapist is able to see what type of movements trigger each specific set of symptoms, in order to avoid repeated episodes of the same condition. This can prevent the onset of chronic pain in the future. Biofeedback can also be helpful in the treatment of other types of chronic pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia, chronic arthritis, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Biofeedback therapy is sometimes recommended for these disorders due to the fact that they do not respond well to prescription medications. Biofeedback targets and manipulates various areas of the human body, such as the muscles, the glands, the autonomic nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the genitor-regulatory system, the skin, the eye, the brain, and the communications pathways. It can be used to alleviate the symptoms of numerous conditions and diseases. Individuals suffering from 1/2

  2. ADD/ADHD, arthritis, diabetic retinopathy, cancer, HIV, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, gynecological disorders, TMJ disorder, and several others may also be helped by biofeedback therapy. One biofeedback therapy application focuses on reducing heart rate variability (HRV). This is an individual's ability to control the heart rate of their heart, using their own body movements. An example would be to have the therapist to apply pressure to the patient's skin across their shoulders while asking the patient to breathe into a machine. The therapist will record the heart rate variability that results from this application. The purpose of this is to help the therapist understand the link between heart rate variability and the severity of heart failure. Biofeedback therapy has been proven to be very effective in treating many psychological conditions, from anxiety to chronic pain, depression, and stress. Some other conditions that biofeedback has been shown to be effective in include chronic fatigue syndrome, attention deficit disorder (ADD/ADHD), muscle spasms associated with Crohn's disease, the abnormal gait of the limbs, and even motion sickness in many people. Many people suffering from ADD/ADHD report that this therapy has greatly improved their symptoms and their ability to focus. Biofeedback can be very effective in the treatment of ADD/ADHD and in managing many physical and emotional disorders and diseases such as depression, migraine headaches, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis, and heart disease. One can check the websites of several clinics that are specialized in these therapies like biocybernaut.com. 2/2
