Artifact Portfolio How Does the Artifact Relate to the AP World History Themes: (you must connect the artifact to at least 2 of the S.P.I.C.E. themes) Political: Advancements in military technology give a temporary advantage to the inventors. The compound bow allowed nomadic people to intimidate and/or attack settled areas, which allowed for greater political power as well as ongoing conflict between the two groups. Interaction between humans and the environment As contacts, both peaceful and hostile, between nomadic and settled peoples, technology was transferred from one group to another. The compound bow was adopted by the settled peoples to defend their lands and cities against the nomadic raiders. This leveled the playing field somewhat and allowed for settled civilization to stabilize and spread. A string is attached to both ends of the bow and an arrow can be projected by stretching the string and releasing. • Importance of the Artifact to: • World History: The compound bow allowed its user to shoot a projectile at a greater distance from his target. The bow could be used for both hunting and for military purposes. Pastorialists first used the compound bow as a part of mounted military weapon. This allowed nomads to strike against settled peoples using speed and distance to their advantage. • Period Covered: The compound bow revolutionized military tactics of both the pastorialists and the settled people during the period prior to 600 BCE. As settled peoples came into daily contact with the nomadic people, military technology such as the compound bow spread. Settled people now how a means to protect themselves from nomadic raiders.
